On Monday, February 12th, the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee held a work session on House Bill 1186, an act relating to the use of firearm-specific merchant category codes. Following a wave of support from NRA members and fellow second amendment advocates, a bipartisan majority of committee members gave the bill an “ought to pass” recommendation. The NRA and its members thank these lawmakers for supporting Granite Staters’ Second Amendment and privacy rights.
House Bill 1186 prohibits the assigning of a specific merchant category code to the sale of firearms, ammunition, or firearm accessories, and provides a civil penalty for violations of this prohibition. This critical legislation protects gun-owners privacy and ensures that bad actors cannot use credit and debit card transactions to create a gun-registry or block cardholders from making gun-related purchases.
This legislation receiving an “ought to pass” recommendation is a major victory, but the fight is not over. Please contact your local lawmakers by clicking TAKE ACTION below and urge them to SUPPORT HB 1186 when it receives a floor vote.
