Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I’ve seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

  1. I shoot 300 grain flat point.
I shot a deer at 150 yards. it was a longer shot than I thought (I left my range finder in the truck) so I didn't compensate from my 100 yard zero, and it hit exactly where I put the crosshair.

  2. The 450 isn't suffering anything, As of this weekend I've taken 37 bucks with my 450 in 3 years all one shot kill's no tracking, I use 300 gr Barnes TSX ammo the rifle is a Mossberg Patriot with a sig whiskey 3 scope at 300 yards I can print 3 shot baseball size groups the 450 and 35 Remington are the only calibers il Carry in the woods

  3. 450 BM is the most accurate straight walled cartridge. It is good to 150 yds with irons, and over 200 with a scope. Recoil is less than a .308, and has almost comparable energy and speed to a 45-70, with less brass, less powder and less recoil. It is almost unaffected by barrel length, and the powder is going to be burned up in the first 9-12 inches of barrel, so it can achieve 1900 to 2100 fps in a range of barrel sizes. It shoots modern projectiles, and can be loaded hot because all of the firearms that shoot this calibre are modern/designed for it. Ammunition for 450 BM is more affordable than 45-70 ammo.

I'd say despite ballistics coefficient, that is quite efficient.

If .308 Win / 7.62 Nato Is the most efficient 30 cal; 450 Bushmaster is the equivalent in efficiency in .45 cal.

  4. .452 is a pistol caliber, .45 long Colt or .45 ACP. But I am sure that it works just fine. Great for close range with great knockdown power. You can still do 200 yards. Kind of like a 35 Remington that you can shoot in an AR platform.

  5. This guy didn’t know anything about the 450 bushmaster. He is reading from a script. I don’t hardly call 2100+ fps slow. It also wasn’t solely designed for use in the AR platform. It was designed for use in more populated areas for hunting. It has greater range than using a slug out of a shotgun and better accuracy. Is it as fast as a high powdered rifle or with the same range? No. But it does have the stopping power out to 300 yards. Personally, might will drive tacks at 150 yards. I have friends that have theirs sighted in for further. I live in Michigan where we can only use a high powered rifle in the northern half of the lower peninsula and all of the upper. From a certain point and to the south, until a few years ago, you could only use a shotgun or muzzleloader in the part. Note we can use a straight walled cartridge not exceeding a certain case length and certain caliber. The 450 bushmaster is one example of such. Another is the 350 legend. I believe there goes all the way to 460 magnum before the case length is to long. The 500 is to long.

  6. Low velocity, high recoil, dismal BC. It .458 socom, and .50 Beowulf are all just gimmicks. Useless beyond 200 yards. If you want magnum power just buy a magnum. You want to thump that truck engine, fine you can do it 600 yards down range with a .30-378, or a 383. Fits in an AR-15 shouldn’t be your only selling point, the AR-10 is better at everything. If you simply must have a big bullet .500 S&W is again better at everything.

  7. The diameter of a 450 Bushmaster is .452 inches, the same as the 45 Colt and the 45 Automatic. The 45-70 Government and the 450 Winchester Magnum rifles use a .458 inch diameter bullet. Don't use .458 bullets in a .452 barrel, they will produce dangerous, excessive pressure. (TOO BIG FOR THE BARREL)

  8. I had read it was designed for use in Special Operations building clearing
A large slow moving projectile without a lot of concern for over penetration.

A close range short barrelled weapon with a 15 round magazine.

A soldier could have a standard M4 carbine for use outdoors and by switching the upper receiver and the magazine have a weapon suitable for building clearing.
