It’s not using a magnifier behind a red dot / EoTech. It’s an ACOG or a prism optic. This was a “high speed” practice for the early 2000’s era operator. While this was not a wide-spread practice, the ACOG worked as a stand-in for a magnifier (which did not exist yet).

With the development of red dot magnifiers and LPVOs, the world had forgotten about this “GWOT operator hack” to extend the range of their rifles, but as a new line of 5x micro prisms became available from @PrimaryArmsOptics, Henry experiments with the once-high-speed practice that has been long forgotten.

  1. Editorial comment: lots of people seem to think the prism is there to replace the red dot. No. It’s there to ENHANCE a red dot only rifle with PID and engagement range, which is why the QD function is paramount. When you don’t use it you can drop weight.

Slight correction from the video, the RP-1 isn’t a true holographic display. It’s a reflected diode but we’ll cover that in a later episode

  2. Not sure what I am missing here, but I dont get why anyone would do this. Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to run a 5x prism with a smaller red dot piggyback or offset? Maybe I'm the idiot, but I don't get this

  3. Maybe I’m missing the point but of course a magnified optic would be better at range than a red dot. This seems like a magnifier with extra steps.
Yes, you get all the benefits of the etched reticle but beyond that this seem slower and bulkier than a magnifier

  4. Wait, are you saying that you could put the prism in front of holosight, and if the holo is zeroed say at 100 yards, you could adjust the prism reticle to overlay the dot of the holo and it would also be zeroed for that range?

  5. That's what we were doing in 04 ,05, 06 we thought we were high tech compared to when I joined the Marines in 99. I got out and have lost track at what the hell optics are out there now. It is amazing and I get so confused talking optics anymore

  6. What’s interesting is that the current cod game MW2 has optics in game that follow this principle I’ll be it roughly. They use a redot or holo sight and magnifier combo, and then pretend that the magnifier has a BDC/ etched reticle in it. Obviously since the most magnifiers are on a swivel mount, that concept wouldn’t work very well in real life because it wouldn’t retain zero from movement very well. But non the less it’s cool to see game the devs implement the idea of having a regular red dot with a BDC/etched reticle stacked to make it multi-purpose optical system.

  7. Maybe someone can explain, but for what reason is the red dot still there in this situation? Wouldn't an offset red dot (either on top of the prism or on a 45) be a better option using the same equipment? I understand this is to enhance a red dot build, but with the price of a 5x prism you could just get an LPVO as well. Interesting concept I just don't see the practical use with current available tech.

  8. Many of the comments miss the point, sometimes the shooter wants a certain red dot and really likes it but wants a BDC, wind and ranging addition, that’s where a magnifier with this addition would be nice to later onto it. If manufacturers would just make red dots with very advanced reticles more often like the acss then regular magnifiers would do just fine.

  9. I’ve been thinking of this for a while, I wonder how well a flip to side mount would return to zero considering some weapon systems have actual optics that flip to side and back.

  10. I mean it is a cool history lesson for the yonger people on the channel and was novel at the time because other options were not available, but these days there are better options with the lpvo or elcan like he said at the atart of the video. This set up was a product of necessity and not optimality.

  11. That was what kept me from going to red dots. I was at the ass end of irons sights in boot camp. By mct it was acogs. I had the liberty of zeroing slap on rear irons before qualifying instead of using the acog. I was never trained on the acog until I took the pmi billet. The acog was so easy, I couldn’t understand the pizza boxes that still came in though…

  12. A K2 AND a SIG556? Just flexing on us unobtanium for having BOTH in one video. Am i jelly? I’m EXTREMELY JELLY. Drippin’ green with avarice here!
