How To Zero A Rifle Scope – A Crude But Effective Method with Army Ranger Dave Steinbach

In this video, retired Army Ranger Dave Steinbach shows how to zero a rifle scope if you have no special zero targets, tools, or an understanding of minutes of angle.

This is a crude, but effective way to zero a rifle scope or optic.

NOTE: We had some audio issues so some parts are muffled and gunshots sound off.

  1. Laser boresighters are cheap nowadays.
Every optic I own was dead on at 15yds before I took it out of the house.
Makes it much easier to zero at farther ranges, and it's one and done on pistol dots.

  2. It sounds like you used a 300m zero for this? Did I get that correct? The initial 25m target distance would change, or could change, for different calibers? I checked out ballistic charts and I am new to this so it is a lottle over my head right now.

  3. Seriously Dave. You’re wasting a lot of time and ammo. Do a 10 yard zero. Take the sight to the round. Then raise it about 2”.
No you should close for farther out work.

  4. I noticed if I center the adjustment screws it’s usually on paper at 25 yards. I have a another way to unstick the springs, I just give it to my son and he just drops it a couple of times.

  5. If you have a vise, shoot your three rounds, make sure the dot is on the aim point and then move the dot to the point of impact. I have also done this off of a bag. If you have someone to adjust while you look, it is easier.

If your iron sights are correct you can just put the dot on them also.

  6. What a great idea for a video, just did this a few years back, nice to see someone else does it this way and it was effective for them too, pure luck it ended up in my feed because I never really search for anything gun related.
