AR-15 Front Sight Base removal and replacement

This rifle is going to be receiving a scope and the factory Front Sight Base will partially block the field of view. A low profile gas block can be a solution. This is another video production by Jim Humphrey of Imminent Threat Defense Firearms Training.

Correction: the nail set punch is a 3/32″ not 5/32″ as stated in the video.

  1. Can anyone say if this is a Ruger 556? This makes it a lot easier to remove the pins if you're trying to remove them in the right direction. While Jim says most pins drive out from left to right but on this rifle, they drive out from right to left, there is no mention as to who made the rifle.

  2. How much does it normally cost for someone to do that to one of those Smith & Wesson AR15 because I was looking at getting one and I was thinking about putting a different one of those systems with the picatinny rails running down them over top of the gas block

  3. THANK YOU!!! The nail set saved my behind. Beat on those tapper pins with an 1/8" punch till all the beating was gone. Went to the hardware store bought a set of three nail sets and in about 10 minutes and 8 whacks pins were out like a high flyball to centerfield. Your well-honed advice turned frustration into a sense of accomplishment. Just one observation you stated a 5/32" set however all I could find locally was 3/32", just wondering. Finally of all the good videos I watched on this step yours proved the most helpful''………again THANK YOU!!

  4. This was helpful but, I hate Smith & Wesson and the fact that they made the front sight a pain to remove with those tapered rounded pins. It's about as awesome as thier jointed trigger on there pistols that felt like mash potatoes when you pulled it. Straight garbage, buy something else. This is a great video and explained a lot…..S&W sucks more than I thought.

  5. i have a colt m4 that has the front sight/gas block combo like this, i see in the comments you mentioned you replaced it with the double star dsc761. why cant i use any of the abundant low profile gas blocks for $20?

  6. I was wanting to remove my front post until I knew all the crap that came with it. Reason being is because I put a red dot on and the front post is in the way. I guess the best option is to raise the red dot sight, or put the old fashioned flip up rear sight on

  7. I finally bought a Ruger 556 online and didn't notice the loose front sight till later on. Luckily Dad had old steel concave nail sets old as me in his gun tool box from 4/32 to a point. Used the 3/32 and his old Tapco brass hammer he used as a AMM2 on the Enterprise during WW2 to tighten up the pins and center the sight, still looks half a degree off, my OCD probably, He had a cool pristine collection going back to a like new Springfield 1873 trap door 45-70 up to few modern ones from the 60s, bought a few Colts at a hardware store in the 50s, times sure have changed!, till few years ago when Mom passed. He did all his own minor gunsmithing. I'm planning on a QR scope mount and keeping irons, think I'll just use a taller mount.

  8. Very nice presentation: no hard rock or banjo background music. I have most of the tools needed to build my first AR-15, but after viewing the difficulty in removing the two sight base pins, I don't think my concave pins are robust enough to do the job. I think perhaps a shot of penetrant a day or two ahead of time and a 3/32 nail set punch might make the project go a little bit smoother.

  9. When I saw him slip the handguard cap back on, I realized that he would not be free floating the barrel. Free float handguards are the rule nowadays at and no longer the exception, especially since he stated in the video that this rifle was going to have a scope put on it. Other than the academic information passed along in the video, it's virtually a waste of time, money, parts, and human effort.

  10. This is a good video. I appreciate it. Adult men should be able to accomplish this task and a great deal more. I'm not demeaning whatsoever the skills and tools required or the hazards involved.

  11. Just looking at mine cause I kind of impulse bought one its actually the same one but I didn't think there was that much going on with the front sight….but In order to take it off I need to buy all those extra things just to get one sight off that im just gonna throw in the trash after I put on a quad rail with a flip up front sight…..time to make some calls I suppose

  12. I was going to buy a ban era AR and replace the FSB with a stabby FSB, thanks to your video I decided to just wait it out and spend the money on an un-neutered A2 model

  13. Master Firearms Instructor, Advanced Armorer? Really? You need a solid back up not a piece of scrap wood. And use a heavier hammer to transfer more power with less hits. Wow
