American's Explain Why They Own AR-15s

1 million US servicemen each year are familiarized with the M-16. It makes perfect sense that they use the AR-15 in civilian life. Simplicity, lower recoil and modularity are great selling points for everyone else. National rifle competitions are for military rifles. Just because you don't own an AR-15, does not mean you can say no one else should have one. Next you will be banning gas-guzzling cars, swimming pools and scissors because "no one NEEDS them".

deceptive/misleading statistics presented here. Pew Research says "Rifles – the category that includes guns sometimes referred to as “assault weapons” – were involved in 3% of firearm murders. " "Mass shootings" are defined as involving 4 or more victims. At approx,.20,000 murders per year, rifles of any kind were used for about 600 murders per year. The reporter says assault rifles are used in 67% of mass shootings. Banning 20 million assault rifles will not prevent mass shootings. Clearly, a different solution is needed. Perhaps stiffer penalties, loss of shooter privacy/rights/citizenship, and/or studies on mass shooting causality are needed. Banning assault weapons is a childish approach..

It's scary to think that for a time period in history where none of us were raised in a gun culture (a la before the 1900's) or with a gun mentality that; people w/ ZERO idea of what it truly means to own a gun and who have absolutely NO understanding of the associated responsibility that goes along with it are, the very ones who own guns in the highest percentages today.

It’s a gun, they kind of all do the same thing, the ar isn’t exceptional at it either. Ironically the thing that is most exceptional is the fact that’s it’s so modular. They are like the legos of the gun world, so it’s very fitting that it’s so popular. It’s a perfect demonstration of hyperindividualism in action. I’ve been around guns my whole life target shooting, hunting etc. and I’ve never had the need for an AR15 and won’t unless I’m going to a combat zone. And no matter what you believe if you think an AR15 is a good choice for home defense you’re an idiot. Why would you want to use a gun who’s bullets will go through walls and possibly kill your family members or neighbors if you have to shoot a home intruder a shotgun is best

You actually made a correct statement (for a change). You don’t need an AR-15 for defense or hunting pigs. If, “Poof” all the AR-15s were instantly gone, there are plenty of other semi-auto rifles that function EXACTLY as an AR-15 that could be used for defense and would quickly take the place of the AR-15 as the “popular “ model. Unfortunately, people like you are so ignorant and waste so much time talking about the AR-15 they ignore problems that lead to violence. I luv you guys and most of what you report seems to be unbiased but, you're way off on the whole "Assault weapon" thing!
First off AR's or AK's and pretty much everything else the media and uninformed people like to call them are simply not "assault weapons" they are semi-automatic weapons not fully automatic like you said late in your cast. Pistols can, and are being made into such 'assault weapons" by a small device called a switch which enables them fire fully automatic with large capacity magazines capable of firing rediculous amounts of lead in a very short period of time! And, pistols are much more concealable and are more likely to go under the radar so to speak.
As far as utility goes, because of the rather small round fired by a standard AR15 (only a .22 caliber bullet) the AR platform is extremly easy to use by people of pretty much every age, old and young so it is a much better self defense weapon than say a shotgun which has way more recoil and if the first shot misses, a follow up is not as easy as an AR.
The old saying goes, "don't bring a knife to a gun fight" is why the AR platform is an excellent choice for defense, its an equalizer in most situations.
And while you think that a tyranical government is too far fetched, you only need to see how our great country was founded and why the 2nd amendment was created! Yeah, it was that important that it was the second thing the fathers thought about and how important the right to bear arms is!
Look at how all the other societies/countries fair when they cannot arm themselves..
You and all the other media need to spell out ALL the facts and see the real statistics about how we're killing each other in this country and more than double the amount are being killed with bare hands and feet than AR's every year!
Look back to the fifties and see how few "mass" shootings there were and at that time, it was way easier to get a gun than it is now! These senseless killings a more a societal problem than a gun problem. People aren't raised with the same values any more and there is less Accountability for actions now.
Gun laws only affect the legal gun owners and the real statiatics prove that. Hell, if they did, Chicago would be the safest place in America!

These guys have AR15s to be cool, free and safe. They think women want them and men envy them. They think they're going to fight the government when it goes Nazi. They think a gang is going to bust down their door to steal their flat screen TV. Guns accomplish none of this statistically and historically. If I lived in a rural area where ambulance law enforcement was far away, I might want to have an assortment of weapons to protect my family (from crooks, animals etc)

If you need to cut down a tree you buy a saw, to complete the task. You don't buy a saw just for the sake of sawing. Firearms were no different. You used to be able to buy them in the hardware just like any other tool. Who spoiled that? I used to say that I wasn't opposed to guns. I have used them myself on farms to eradicate feral pests and also put animals out of their misery.

When do you need an AR style weapon? Ans. When the person or persons coming after you has one. Suppose the Jewish citizens of Nazis Germany had assault rifles? Look how unstable the US Government is now. The US military has already been used against the citizenry. The Obama administration made it legal to use the military against the people. You aren't going to bring sanity by removing assault rifles. Assault rifles in the hands of responsible citizens is a deterrent to a rouge military. If we had stricter laws most if not all mass shootings could have been prevented. The Congress has been paid off, there is where we need to force the law makers to introduce sensible legislation. I believe that if they are allowing people own assault weapons and we have crazy people buying them. You would be a fool not to have one.
