In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves talks about something we’ve all been wondering ourselves: Is the FN 5.7x28mm round better than 9mm? Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, but there’s no debate that there are at least 5.7 things that the 5.7 mm does better than the legendary 9mm round. James discusses the advantages of this modern, high-tech caliber, as well as a few of the shortcomings presented by this controversial caliber. Special thanks to @Buffman – R.A.N.G.E. and @ShootingTheBull410 for the excellent videos and research on the 5.7mm.

  1. My first ever EDC was a .380 1911 with +P+ ammo. My second handgun I decided on the Ruger 57. I liked it so much I went ahead and got an LC Carbine. Now I have a complete battle system in 5.7. Interchangeable magazines, and I can carry more ammo than with my 5.56 setup. I put a custom muzzle brake on the LC and replaced the plastic pop up sights with MagPul steel ones. Also polished the inner workings to the point of absolute fluid motion. The internals mash so well together the cycling is hardly noticeable when racking.

  2. This is BS. Go watch Paul Harrell's videos on the 5.7. it is an overhyped round that you could call ".22WMR +p. If you only watch one of Harrell's videos on 5.7 watch the one on Ruger Carbine. His bottom line is that it makes a great small game rifle. I suspect that James is shilling for FN here.

  3. FN 5.7 is a smooth operating system gun . It’s not good to shoot 1/2 inch metal plate at 25 yards . It came back and hit the tree next to me , Anything past 50 yards is good .

  4. Funny thing is, what a lot of people don't know about nato and 5.7….FN and H&K were the only 2 manufacturers going for that contract (FN w/5.7) and (H&K w/4.6 round that the MP7 uses)….FN and the 5.7 was ultimately picked, but then HK in all their glory got butthurt and started throwing legal actions at FN, and kept demanding Nato retest….Nato ended up Essentially saying "screw the both of you" amd 9mm was kept as the main small arms round…..we should be rocking 5.7 Glocks by now, thanks HK!!

  5. In the Fort Hood shooting the terrorist used a 5.7 and murdered 13 people, injuring another 32, so fudd idea that the 5.7 is somehow not very lethal is clearly not true.

  6. As to the gel tests and wound channels experts, if you can hit the target center mass and get around inside the body there, that person is going to have a very bad day, 5.7, 9mm, 45acp it don't matter.

  7. I hated my FN 5.7 due to the ergonomics. I liked the round a lot, glad to see Ruger and PSA with new options. Really interested in getting my hands on the PSA 5.7. I always wished Smith & Wesson's M&P would have made a 5.7 offering.

  8. How many does it take to actually stop the guy wearing the armor who is throwing 9mm or larger at you though as those tiny rounds zip right through and continue to the moon. This sounds oddly familiar to the problem a lot of vets had voiced about the 5.56 compared to 7.62.

  9. I'm skeptical of the CCW/defense utility for the 5.7 handguns. In a soft target the velocity is down in the range where you see little to no TC damage and velocity-dependent rounds like 5.56 and 5.45 go from being certain death (center mass) to survivable clean hole wound tracts as documented in the countless studies of FMJ handgun shootings. It's weaker than .22 WMR from a rifle and I don't think that would drop something a hog or buck. All that is ignoring the fact that SS197 has 50-60% of the energy of duty caliber ammo.
