The Streamlight TLR VIR 2 is the cheapest infrared laser/illuminator combination unit on the market. Though it’s primarily intended for use on pistols, it can be pressganged into service on a long gun rail as well. The activation method and effectiveness of the illuminator leave something to be desired, however.
If you’re truly desperate for an IR LAM, but you only have $300, you may not have any other choice.

NB: Streamlight doesn't currently offer a remote switch kit for the TLR VIR 2. The long gun kit for the TLR 1 and the TLR VIR 1 isn't compatible because both of those units are dual battery, and have a different battery door design.
I got so used to shooting passive that by the time I could afford a good IR unit I spent that cash on more ammo to get in more practice. I don't regret the decision considering 3 months later .223 quadrupled in price.
What camera are you using at night? Looks killer man.
Just got one for mounting onto the MP5 or scorpion but haven't tried it yet, guess I should at least check to see how well it clamps on.

What makes IR illuminators illegal? Is it the actual hardware, like a PEQ which is heavily regulated? Or is it the specific IR spectrum frequency?

Nope by a long shot. Get a WML with IR capability, and passively sim through a red dot. Lasers are easier, but not necessary.
I got the 9007 today and took it around my suburb. I must say it doesn’t handle photonic barriers well. It doesn’t look nearly as bright as in your review but you are in a much darker environment. I think I’m going to return it for a perst.

A pop can strip might be enough of a shim between the rail and the mount claws to make it hold tight.
How important is auto-gating??? I can get white phosphor without autogate or green with autogating. Which is the more important feature?
