There’s lot of talk about how popular Pistol Caliber Carbines have become. Some complain that it doesn’t have enough knock-down power. However, if size and weight are an issue, you can get great performance from a Pistol Caliber Carbine. That’s because the ammo is already designed for short “Pistol” barrel lengths. Running 5.56mm through the same short barrel length, and you just end up gettinga huge fireball, because half the gun powder still hasn’t lit yet when the bullet leaves the barrel. This also equates to the 5.56mm bullet not speeding up enough, resulting is basically hitting the target with the force of a 22LR.
Now, I’m not saying that the Pistol Caliber Carbines should replace adult rifles… not at all. However, if you have physical limitations, are small in stature & strength, or have others in your household that are; then the PPC might be a good Home Defense option for you.

Plus, they are a blast to shoot. Hope you enjoy the video.

  1. Contrary to the advice in this video there are plenty of dedicated AR 9 manufacturers who build reliable 9mm carbines with last round bolt hold. I've built 4 Quarter Circle 10 AR 9s from 4"-9" and every last one runs like a sewing machine.

  2. USPSA guys don’t hate PCC…we love it. It’s the fastest growing class. And it’s now jumping over to the IPSC world because it’s so popular. And you’re not competing against pistols. You’re competing against guns in your division. For folks that run multiple divisions, it’s a cool way to compare fairly different guns, production, open, and PCC, on the same courses of fire and see how they run. Same with Steel Challenge. It highlights what you’ve (Karl) said many times. Carbines/SBRs are the best platform to deliver a lot of well placed shots quickly. Doing it in pistol calibers allows us to do that safely on pistol ranges and shoot steel safely. Short of a full pro class, it’s the best way to train, improve, and run your rifle platform hard.

  3. People hate pcc's cause the hood loved them and they (pcc haters) know the ultimate purpose of something so lethal, concealable really the perfect murder weapon for non police

  4. Cuz a 5in barrel on a banshee does not have a advantage over a 5in pistol. There may be some but there are many advantages where the pistol has advantages over the bigger heavier bulkier two-hand operation of the banshee.

Now on the other hand: if you're getting it for a specific purpose Maybe.

And on the third hand: if you're determined to have something short Compact and Powerful, go with something that has a 8 or 10 inch barrel.
I would gamble that a 10 mm out of a 8in barrel would probably do more damage then a 556 out all of the same length barrel.

  5. I've get you point but, on a cqb situation inside my house I'm rather stick to some powerful round handgun, like a magnum, .45 acp or baby glock if wife use is needed.
P.s. stoping power in mind, but nevertheless you have you point, ar plataform is choice for military personnel.

  6. Hey Karl, another great vid. Also watched your 556 vs 300 blk for home defense RIFLE vid. You touched on the SBR vs PCC a bit here. What about the hybrid approach of AR PISTOL (so no tax stamp required – yet…) in either 556 or 300 blk? Maybe another vid idea, 10.5in for the former (most common, though some argue 11.5in is better bc of a) slightly increased velocity and b) better dwell time, impacting cycling reliability, though you can tune any issues away with buffer and spring changes as well as adjustable gas blocks as a last step) vs 9in or 10.5in for the latter, looking at ballistics gel comparisons for various rounds? The "dream scenario" seems to be pointing toward subsonic suppressed 300 blk, aka "spicy 45." Curious as to your thoughts? Keep those great vids coming!

And on this Memorial Day weekend, let's all remember that while "All gave some, some gave all." Freedom isn't free, THANK YOU to all who served. God bless America
