Guns & Ammo Rifles & Optics Editor Tom Beckstrand was on location in Idaho where he pushed the limits of the 5.56 NATO cartridge in this segment of “Long Range Tech” for Guns & Ammo TV. Pairing a SIG Sauer MCX Virtus rifle loaded with Hornady’s 73-grain ELD-M ammunition, Beckstrand attempted to ring steel set at 1,270 yards, an incredible distance for any 5.56-chambered rifle and beyond the typical range for an AR-15.

OMG, another snub nosed 16" barrel. So stupid. Put a 20" barrel and be done with it. You'll never find a shot 16" barrel that can complete with a 20". The wind is DEAD calm. On the calmest of day, you might hit more than you miss, but don't count on it. Ya know I wonder what your round count was for the day, and I'd bet you probably missed more than you hit. You got 4 hits in a row, that's probably the most in a row for the day. I bet you miss 6, hit one then miss another 5. Hell, kids do that well with a bb gun all day.
300 yards in the service? Wtf. Coast guard maybe, in the Corps we shoot 500 yards with iron sights but I'm just a dumb grunt
Believable since Sig makes good barrels, it's heavy grain match ammo, they have experienced marksman, and they are shooting below the horizon. This is still useful if you're visiting Stan or do not hunt on the flatlands. It'd be better to have a stainless steel 20" barrel that has been nitrided.
Was this at thunder ranch?
1:40 … wait, a 78.6 Mil come up?? That doesnt seem right at all. At sea level, strelok and hornady ballistic computers give me a come up of 25-30mils needed for 1270 yds using the same BC and velocity as stated in the vid. 78 is ridiculously off. I doubt that scope can even travel that far. Even with a 20moa mount. Am I missing something?
Ammo’s cheap??? And you said this right in the heart of the pandemic and riots when ammo was, and still is stupid high.
Aug 10, 2020 "Ammo's cheap"
Dec13,2020 Ammo can't be found for anything less than the price of your soul
Army and Marines need an effective combat range though. Don't often get to lay still with a high power scope and have the Enemy sit still for em.
Useless video.
You might as well walk up and shot them with a pellet gun at at close range as apposed to shooting them at that distance with a 5.56…..go take a fighting rifle class at realistic ranges instead of wasting your money.
No sir, ammo is not cheap
I have tikka tac a 1 223(produced for limited time) still can find for sale. Took frontier ammo 55 gr send it out over and over again to 1000 yds to 30 in. Or so old disk blade. ran out of landscap to go further but a guy on YouTube went out to 2k yds so yeah
“Ammo’s cheap”
3000 thousand elevation helps.
50 cents per round for the cheap bulk stuff is not exactly "cheap" as you put it. Also, if Jerry can do 1000 yards with a 9mm revolver, then why are you so skeptical that a rifle round won't make it another 270?
"Ammo is cheap" Biggest clue that this was filmed in the past.
"Ammo is cheap" talk about the biggest lie of 2020, I can get 2 tuna cans of 5.45 for the price of 250 tula 5.56
"Ammo is cheap" at the 2:56 mark…. Yea no it's not. It's 2020 shit is crazy expensive
this feels like a giant advertisement, the use of panning shots and talking over B-roll only adds to the feeling.
not to mention the fucking terrible dubbed sounds
Waste of a round and time. Ridiculous to even think this is relevant. Paper target crap only.
Great video…the longest I've shot with 5.56 was 400 yards. Again.. great video
As a Marine I qualified at 500 yards with iron sights
I'm getting a complete 20" upper to extend my capability…
I don't think many people debate the fact that .223 can reach out and touch in the right barrel length, twist and bullet grain weight. I think the issue has always been energy on target. 130 ft/lbs at distance is the same as 22lr at the muzzle
