Not true. The etched reticle type aren't very accurate, but a true bullet drop compensator can work quite well if calibrated to the round and rifle.
I have a 270Win with a BDC scope on it. Extremely accurate. But I etched the ring for it after determining the trajectory of the bullet.

I only use one load for my 270.
And I'll put my Accutrac up against anything in its class.
