In the wake of a mass shooting in Colorado, former president Barack Obama called for action against gun violence, slamming “cowardly politicians” for opposing firearm restrictions. The shooting in Colorado is yet another mass shooting perpetuated with the use of an AR-15. In fact, about 25 percent of the past 80 mass shootings have involved AR-15s. In this special report, MSNBC’s Ari Melber walks through the history and development of the deadly weapon, and details Biden’s efforts to ban it from civilian use for good. In 1934 congress passed the very first legislation on firearms, it was mainly aimed to stop the sale of fully automatic firearms (primarily the Thompson M1921) due to their wide use in prohibition gang violence. It also placed regulations on the minimum lengths for sawed-off/short-barreled firearms. The law had bipartisan backing and was even championed by the NRA, to this not one person batted an eye or felt as if their 2nd Amendment rights were being impeded on. Look, no one is trying to ban ALL firearms here, just the ones that go beyond the meanings of self-defense and hunting. The M1921 was designed late in WWI as a way to clear an enemy trench of all hostiles in the quickest way possible. Unfortunately, by the time it was put into production the war was over and had no military contracts, so the company switched to the civilian firearm market. The AR15 like the M1921 was designed as a weapon for war, not sport.
