The death toll from the shooting in Colorado may be unusual in most countries, but it’s common in the U.S. because the alleged killer used an “AR-15 style rifle,” a weapon explicitly meant for going on offense and not defense. In this special report, MSNBC’s Ari Melber traces the origins of the weapon and its intended use, how civilians came about using it in increasing numbers, and what makes it so deadly. This is an excerpt from a longer special report. Aired on 03/23/2021.

  1. Sadly it will take generations before gun laws radically change like most countries the US does not like looking outside to see what actually works in a modern society, i do have confidence this along with religion will one day be a thing of the past

  2. The AR15 is buy all accounts a 5.56 x 45 round commonly referred to as the .233 Remington which is common among varmint hunters. This means that any semi automatic version of this rifle will be just as effective. I have a bolt action variant that more than doubles the length of the barrel. Longer barrel = faster rounder= more accurate. So what makes the AR15 so attractive to these shooters? MINDSET!!!

The AR15 can be used in close quarter settings but it is not ideal by any stretch imagination. If I, an Army Vet, was gonna go into a close quarters operation. I would prefer two high capacity 9mm pistols with hollow points. But these idiots are trained by media (not just news) to think this is the weapon of choice. But because of MINDSET banning the AR15 doesn't solve the issue. The AK47 has been popularized by the media as well and it does more damage. If the perp can't get the AR they will go for the AK.

    Just my opinion though.

  3. You’re wrong about this Ari, I like you but Guns aren’t the problem. The second amendment secures all our other rights. This is NOT the same weapons issued in theaters of war, those aren’t AR15’s, those are M4’s and M16’s. Regardless 277 longgun deaths last year less than 10 were AR15’s. Over 600 people killed with hands and feet last year. In London, where all guns are banned, they had 1200 something odd stabbing murders last year. Is not the tool it’s the mindset. We have a mental health problem. AR15’s aren’t it.

  4. Hahahahaha a .556 round will never blow someone's head clean off. Yes, we need stricter gun control but you can't make an argument that an AR15 is more deadly than a non AR firearm. This is fear mongering.

  5. I'm a moderate democrat and these AR-15 discussions aren't being put in a fair light. I don't think it's responsible journalism to show images of military with fully automatic weapons when discussing issues about AR-15s. The AR-15 is semiautomatic just like a pistol and the military uses M4 carbines which look the same, but fire burst fire or fully automatic. Other weapons besides the AR-15 use the same rifle ammunition and are just as deadly. There are plenty of other "non-assault" style weapons that can hold or be made to hold the same number of rounds. AR-15s are just the most popular, along with the AK platform, for their reliability and ease of use and maintenance. Just because it looks like a military rifle doesn't make it one. The same for cars, it may look like a racecar on the street but for it to be street legal, it'll never really be a racecar. We shouldn't ban guns (besides fully automatic and burst fire weapons, i.e. "racecars"), just license them like we do with cars. As an American, I should be able to buy a semiautomatic version of any firearm our military uses.

  6. The AR-15 has replaced the AK-47 as the weapon of choice for psychotic gun nuts. And they'll keep rules lawyering us about how it technically isn't an assault rifle. That, and accuse us of "politicizing" legislation

  7. If the killing of innocent children , didn’t change any gun law , what makes Americans think the govt n nra will change law ! Another mass shooting waiting to happen , this was a terriost attack.

  8. What could possibly go wrong? – Weapons of war, made for mass murder, and made freely available to all and sundry. Combined with a proportion of the population who are psychopathic and see their fellow citizens as enemies and therefore targets.

  9. The real problem we have are Republican voters who won't hold GOP Senators accountable for voting against sensible gun control. Over 90% of Americans back "common sense" legislation and yet 50 Senators say no…because they are afraid of the NRA. The backdrop is our families, friends, and neighbors continue to be needlessly murdered.

  10. This guy…all weapons came from military application. I can do that too, here is proof the bow and arrow is a weapon of war. Here is proof the pitchfork is a weapon of war (peasant uprisings) Here is proof the javelin is a weapon of war. Here is proof the hatchet is a weapon of war…..I can do this all day. Edit: and wtf is an ar15 style assault rifle? Is it an ar15 or not. Is it an ak47? Is it the mp15? The dp12 looks like and assault rifle but its not its a double barrel shotgun. You can't even name the proper model, the term assault rifle is just a catch phrase now.

  11. Americans (the ones who don't see the problem with guns) are in a serious state of denial. It's like when people believed wearing masks would "activate the covid" because it's easier to do believe what is convenient to your lifestyle. Even though people in other countries with worse air quality wear masks all the time without issue, people in other countries also have much stricter gun laws and have significantly less mass shootings as a result.
Who needs an AR-15 for self defense? Go ahead and make the argument that someone "could" use it for self defense, but that wasn't my question. Someone "could" also use a fully automatic shotgun for self defense, but I'm asking who NEEDS either of these absurd weapons simply for personal defense. Even a simple handgun alone has insane killing power. There is NO need to have AR-15s available to people.
Also in case anyone is still making the "but when gun sales are restricted in a state gun crimes barely go down" that's because anyone interested in getting a gun that's outlawed in their state can simply go to a neighboring state, or just buy from a private dealer. When you sell a car you have to get the registration transferred over to the new owner, yet this is not required for guns. People say that if you outlaw guns they will just get them on the "black market" but right now people can just buy and sell out in the open to anyone they want. Requiring background checks is progress but we don't even require people to have a report who they sell guns to if they're not selling from a business.

  12. Also, M16s are issued in the military. Not AR15s. ARs are semi Auto and only send one round per pull. They are lying to you. Also, even if it was semi-auto, I'd actually need one, seeing that I cant have a police interaction without 3 cars showing up, and being in the custody of people who wish to murder me anyways. I want a fighting chance and will not be surrendering that right to you.

  13. I'm so sick of this debate, just ban the stupid gun and do a few studies. If that seriously helps then screw it keep it banned. I'm betting it does very little and hand gun continue to be an issue as well. Our process of getting a gun needs to be better filtered so mental health cases or down right criminals can't get them so easily.

  14. I love shooting and I have 4 guns but come on America, time for background checks and restrictions on assault rifles … pretty simple … it’s a weapon of human lethality …

  15. If the best defence against a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun – why haven't we heard of at least ONE good guy with a gun stopping a mass shooting sometime in the last 15 years?
I can only assume there hasn't been one, because if there was, the right-wing wouldve been holding that up every time as proof of their strategy.

  16. While I think that AR-15’s 5.56 ammunition is something to consider. If you take away at-15s. The same people can still take a hand gun with more rounds and doa very similar amount of damage. Arguably more depending on how much training they take on.

Just like we do in America we are scratching at the symptom instead of digging at the real underlying problem. Why are these people doing this? Maybe something is wrong with our society. 16 year old did not take semi auto pistols

  17. Def tragic and don't like seeing this stuff but I think we all know an AR15 doesn't take limbs off of people, they need to increase the difficulty of purchasing these types of weapons for sure, but taking these away won't stop mass shootings, people can easily get a semi automatic striker fired pistol with multiple magazines and he just as deadly

  18. The key is the magazine.

Traditional hunting rifles and shotguns usually have 2-4 rounds. And are usually not detachable.

The AR-15 has 30. And it's magazine can be.

    That's the difference.
