In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves tests a $450 hodge-podge kit build AR-15 – a complete DMPS upper on a complete Stag lower – against his personal top-tier Bravo Company Mk2 complete rifle. To spice things up a bit, James has outfitted the BCM with a $1,800 Maven RS.4 5-30x optic, and the DPMS will be using a cheap $250 Bushnell 4-16x scope. James shoots both rifles at 100 yards and compares performance using CBC 55gr M193 ammunition, 55gr Wolf Gold, 62gr ZQI/MKE, and Hornady Black 75gr. Does the $450 franken-build even hold a candle to the $1,500 BCM premium rifle? Find out today on TFBTV.

  1. To be honest you might have done better because of the optic.. since the optic wasn't as powerful on the cheap gun you were able to get better groups because less magnification equals a steadier shot.. the reticle isn't bouncing as much because of the higher magnification. The higher and higher the magnification goes the easier it gets to make a small movement throw you way off target.

  2. Let's say we get into a fire fight against one another.. I have the cheaper gun and you have the more expensive gun… if I shoot you right off the bat because I'm a better shot than you and the fight ends immediately, did it really matter if you spend a couple thousand dollar more on your rifle?

If your just buying it for home protection you don't want it to fall apart in your hands right when you need it but you absolutely don't need to buy a weapon that will endure three combat tours just for home defence..

  3. Iv always valued a arsenal of many “budget builds” much more than a few brand name AR’s at a premium. Some
say it’s price and quantity over quality, but this video proves this isn’t always so in the AR realm. ☝️

  4. All I get out of this is that you may not hit that squirrel in the head at 100 yards. All of these are still within center mass if this was a person target. Not many people purchase these rifles to do marksman courses. Ive used both Moriarti and Palmetto at CQB and level 2 carbine courses and blow the instructors out of the water in king of the hill competitions. Ive been running this platform for 17 years.

  5. I built a custom 14.5 with a lot of good stuff, Daniel Defense barrel, Vltor upper, good trigger etc. I'm building a 6.5 Grendel DMR with a bunch of high quality parts as well, I love good stuff.

However when I hear people say degrading things about someone's cheap gun when it's all they could afford it makes me cringe. I've even heard some assholes on some of these videos commenting that someone shouldn't even buy a gun if all they can afford is a cheap one. A professional combat expert with experience would take that piece of shit rifle and when against most people who are using a fancy one. I'm actually planning to build a cheap AR pistol with the brace. Just because I don't plan to use it on any long range activities anyway and for home defense it's not going to matter on a situation like that, you're not going to have time to line up your sites all carefully anyway.

  6. I have built, fixed, repaired, etc. COUNTLESS AR15s. My build cost 1000 bucks total and will destroy your 2500 BCM, Daniel Defense, Sig, etc. I've proven it time and time again with money and pride on the line… The name brand and price doesnt mean jack sh!!!!t. The quality of components is far more important. The quality of optics is important too, but the diminishing return plays a factor more than the rifle. I've made life long customers after smoking them at the range. People seem to think that better ammo, better gear, etc. will make them shoot sub MOA. My Dad still out shoots me and he is half blind at this point (I'm decent but the old man is a legend)… If you want to know the secret, it's the shooter.

A great barrel (ballistic advantage 18") and nice trigger certainly helps though…

  7. Typical, everyone thinks that price tag is strong indicator of performance, yet test show over and over that you have to get into a very high price range to see a sign difference in performance.

  8. You missed 1 very important difference between the guns that handicapped your low cost option. The barrel isn't free floated. So some of your accuracy issues could have been caused by your bench wrest.

  9. So what your saying is for 450$ + a 200$ trigger I can have 99% of the performance of a 1500$ rifle, minus perhaps lifespan. Yeah I'll still take the lower cost option…in fact I did I bought a 500$ (after tax, shipping & ffl ) radical firearms. It prints sub 3" group @ 200yds all day.
