Testing the Nikon P-Tactical .223 AR BDC scope as an alternative to LPVOs or red dots. Much of this applies to magnified prism optics as well.

  1. I work at academy sports in houston and have heard the same thing about nikon. I believe they make the glass for lots of other scope manu's? I could be wrong. I do run 2 6x optics on rifles right now. My savage 111 fcns '06 has a really old Burris 6×32 hunting scope. My 18" dmr i built using edc tactical billet lower matched upper and rails is wearing a early primary arms 6×32 acss… my dmr is 556… love both those. I used the p.a. in a run n gun event a couple yrs ago.

  2. I might put something like that on a .22 bolt gun… nothing for serious use, but just something to plink with. (I like a 4×32 for plinking with .22’s or pellet guns, but sometimes 4x is a bit more than I need… just a thought!)

  3. I think the purpose would be good on a .223 survival rifle like an RDB-S or lightweight folding AR-15 where fixed power = greater durability and lighter weight while having a magnified optic. But you generally wouldn't want exposed turrets for that role since you want to minimize anything going wrong in that scenario.

  4. Hey Hop! I have that scope. A lot of what you say is true. I put it on my M&P Sport. Budget rifle/budget scope. I live on a small farm, and I wanted a simple no frills optic for predator control. BTW, the M&P Sport is a really accurate AR, and having a 3x scope brings it up a notch. Definitely not the best CQB optic, but for making a 150 yard shot across a field, it works. The adjustable turrets help if I switch loads. Main reason I bought it was price, and it is a really clear optic. Being the owner of a Sig 250 ( thanks Sig for no customer support on that discontinued model) having a discontinued scope just fits right in my my meager gun colection. I've had the scope about 4 years, no issues, holds zero.

  5. I'll say having a Burris 5x prism scope (the AR556 model I believe), that thing is definitely daylight bright on the brightest setting, though there's only a 1 inch eyebox so it's not necessarily quick
