I believe the comment was already made but you're asking for trouble with a vertical grip. I have plenty of AR pistols and not a one has a vertical grip. Why would you buy one when you can build one. Not a fan of Ruger products. Use one of their lowers on a build and it's just poor quality.

I wouldn't fool around with a vertical grip for lack of functional benefits, let alone the legalities, which are very gray. It's a pistol, and most ATF agents (and LEOs) would say a vertical grip makes it an AOW in a hearbeat, despite the overall length measurement with the stock extended. I'd be content with the fact that this is effectively an SBR without the NFA classification.
