ILA | Vermont: Governor Phil Scott Vetoes Waiting Period Bill

Last night, Gov. Phil Scott vetoed S.169 which would have created a 24-hour waiting period on handguns.  This legislation was deeply flawed, and we applaud the Governor’s action yesterday.  During weeks of testimony, there was never any compelling evidence presented that this bill would have done anything more than infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens.  Waiting periods have no demonstrated impact on public safety.  However, this bill would have virtually ended gun shows and banquets in the state and hurt local economies.   More importantly, it would have denied a basic and fundamental right to those who have an urgent self-defense need.

Thank you to all the NRA Members who stepped up multiple times by contacting your legislators and the Governor’s office.   We also appreciate your strong support attending two public hearings during the 2019 session.  Your voice was heard.  While this year’s legislative activity closes on a strong note, let’s remember that anti-gun groups will be back in force next January, and we will once again be asked to answer the call.  Remember, your voice matters.
