We replicate convoy dust conditions and torture a mix-master BCM upper M4gery/AR15.

The AK74 passed this test with flying colors here:

How will the M4 do?

  1. The only time I’ve ever had an issue with moon dust was during emv before my first deployment. I had just finished cleaning my rifle and had never thought of not running it wet and when some ospreys came in to land dust went everywhere. We were then flown to conduct an assault on a mount town and my rifle had become a magazine fed straight pull bolt action. After I had time to clean it out with a toothbrush I was left with a substantial clump of wet oily sand in my hands and a good lesson.

  2. I am personally quite surprised that your AR was able to run so well dry dust or no dust. I have personally had the experience of an immaculately clean But dry M-16 that ran perfectly FOR 1 MAG but couldn’t manage two rounds in a row no the Second mag And went right back to running perfectly as soon as I put lube on it.

  3. So I just had to be that guy and point this out but the AK had its bolt closed when you kicked dust on it and the AR had its bolt locked open. I know it’s a distinct feature that separates the two which have its pros and cons so that could be the reason for leaving it locked open but I think the ar15 would have done even better if the bolt was closed during the test. Either way watching both videos I personally see it as a near tie with the AK ever so slightly edging out the win. I’d have to put the videos up side by side but it seemed it took both of you similar times to get them back to running order.

  4. That photo you are talking about with the soldier holding a G3 and covering the ejection port is likely Danish or Norwegian, the Swedes have used the Ak5 since the 80s.

  5. Is this really a fair test?

The ak was designed to not need lubricant which is one reason why it's tolerances were so loose.

The ar was designed with tight tolerances, that requires lubricant in reality… So the ar should be tested with lubricant right, at least dry lubricant.

  6. In my military experience the m4a1's malfunction all the time for a few reasons..1: bad mags. 2:ammo with dents on the casings. 3: the h1 buffer mimics an undergassed gun in adverse conditions. They only shoot brass 2 feet. That's my 2 cents
