Let’s get a close look at all of the parts I selected for the new Scout AR concept rifle. I’m anticipating a LOT of blowback for various choices I’ve made, but I’m sticking to my guns (puns intended).

Equipment list:
1. CMMG Stripped Lower
2. Anderson Stripped Upper
3. CMMG Bolt Carrier Group
4. CMMG 16″ Stainless Barrel (5.56, mid-length, 1:7″ twist)
5. CMMG Gas Tube
6. CMMG Lower Parts Kit
7. CMMG Upper Parts Kit
8. RISE Armament RA-140 Trigger
9. ATI Tactlite Mil-Spec Stock:
10: ATI X2 Grip:
11. CMMG Mk4 Charging Handle
12. KNS Pins:
13. ATI Slim Free-Float Forend (15″):
14. CMMG Gas Block (0.750″)
15. Amend2 Magazines (FDE):
16. Ultradyne C4 Sights:
17. Nikon Force XR 2.5-8x32mm EER Scope:
18. GrovTec Quick Adjust Sling (FDE):

20. Modern Spartan Systems Starter Kit:

So what will we have once we combine all these parts? A solid AR-15, really. But by its very nature it should retain many of the favorable elements of a Scout rifle: a short overall length, light weight, good iron sights, a detachable box magazine, and enough accuracy to make solid impacts at 450 yards. The one primary element we’re missing is a hard-hitting caliber like 308 Winchester. But with the right (heavy) projectile selection, this rifle will be able to do everything I need from it in my hunting area, where we’re most likely to encounter hogs and coyotes, not bears and moose. Perhaps at some point we’ll swap the barrel on this scout rifle to another chambering like 6.5 Grendel.

The other odd point is, of course, the scope. We plan to test the this rifle at first with an extended eye relief (EER) scope, and then we’ll perform a direct comparison with a low-power variable optic (LPVO) like the Falcon S8i I reviewed a while back. And how about throwing a red dot sight in the mix?

  1. Currently building and aero Percision A.R. 15 with a light profile ballistics advantage barrel 16 inch length with a 17 inch Breek Arms handguard. Oh the barrel has a mid length gas system. This will allow my internal parts to last longer in the recoil to be a little less. I’m using a Magpul MS4 sling. A Palmeadow State Armory bolt carrier group that has been MPI inspected. Hey Cisno 1000 lm weapon light with the remote switch and Magpul K2 pistol grip which is extremely comfortable it actually mimics an actual pistol grip on a pistol which relaxes your wrist give you better control and aligns your hand and trigger finger with the trigger. Most of it is built I’m now waiting to buy the optic for it which will be a 1-8×24 primary Arms scope. The back up sites are UTG slim pro or I think they’re called ultra. I’m waiting on those to be delivered. And the barrel is a wylde chamber which will give me better performance between 5.56 mm and the .223 caliber. Can’t wait to get the optics so I can start shooting this. Oh yeah I forgot the butt stock it’s from Magpul is well CTR

  2. Cartridge choise has two Scout concepts in conflict – readily available ammo and ability to kill animals. Sure, a .223 can kill a deer with a 75 gr bullet, but the ammo that's readily available is 55 and 62 gr fmj. Not so great for hunting. So if you're going to throw one requirement out the window, it may as well be ammo availability and make it the rifle a Grendel.

  3. Building an AR lightweight special purpose rifle right now just taking my time so I can slowly buy quality parts instead of rushing to put the cheapest parts together. So far is looking more like an accurate RECCE more than anything else!! Good vid.

  4. In order to stay within Cooper’s concept, I was expecting to see a big bore variety like 450 Bushmaster. I like the intent though. Maybe a .223 Wylde would make a better RECCE.

  5. Man I’m looking forward to seeing this go together! Is that gas block steel or aluminum? And I’m curious: why did you decide to go with a 15” hand guard? I would have thought you’d go with a 12” since you want it to be lighter and and you only have a 16” barrel anyway.
