Bolt Action vs Semi Auto Accuracy

Is a bolt action any more accurate than a semi auto? What about at 100 yards? I shoot 4 groups with factory match grade ammo to see if the AR platform is any less accurate than a bolt action precision rifle.

  1. Thanks for the video.  Everyone has their own standard or acceptable accuracy level.  Not enough groups for me to really know.  Based on the groups you did shoot neither of these guns are accurate at all with the ammo you tried.  If a bolt gun isn't shooting in the 6's it's not very accurate for me.  Semi Autos…I don't expect much better than what yours did…but should be pushing 1" with your set up and lead sled.

  2. Sorry, but what is the point in comparing these rifles at 100 yards? Neither is intended for use at such close distance, realistically, if you are going to use these combatively you're going to want to exceed the range of assault rifle caliber (7.62×51), so anything less than 600 yards would beg the question – "are you using the correct tool for the job"?

  3. Biped Targets: if hit from a 8moa or .25moa delivery, it really doesn't matter. Bleed out in less than 2 minutes.Even when a medic is envolved (w/all modern medical supplies). Medivac in route 14 minutes ETA (city), 2.8 hours ETA (lost in the woods). Just saying about accuracy to those bitch about .0001moa accuracy.

I realize the video was about accuracy, but the final outcome is about survivability when SHTF.

  4. I had an Armalite AR10 with a 18" Noveske barrel which I sold like a complete retard…but it was the most accurate rifle Ive ever owned besides a Savage BVSS 22-250 (which was stupid accurate). Semi autos have come a long way now that you can get match barrels for them with free float hand guards and match triggers. I prefer bolt action rifles for precision shooting though.

  5. very good video but the groups seems way to big!

any decent bolt action on the Sierra MK can probably run 1 MOA or better. I would expect the RPR to run sub-MOA quite easily, based on other reviews.

The Semi-Auto typically should run larger groups, unless was custom built and tuned to a specific round. I can get 1.5 MOA with the 168 SMKs through my LRB Sporter of a bipod and sandbag. I would expect the AR10 platform to do better.

I would give it a second round to be honest with you and I agree with the other comments to run groups of 5.

  6. when I was quite Young I always thought semi-automatic what is the way to go. a gentleman that owned a gun store talk to me and to graduating to a bolt action, Browning 300 Win Mag and ever since then I've been hooked because it only takes one round to successfully Harvest an elk or a deer or whatever it is you might be experiencing in the natural resources available to Americans here in the United States.

  7. I'm liking the scenario of 100 yard comparison. Have you stretched your capabilities with the .308? Any results to share at 200, 400 or further? All in all another fine vid and thanks for sharing

  8. the "high powered" rifle we always shot when i was kid was a remington 700 in rem 7mm mag and the we didn't get into semi auto guns till i was 18, a couple of reasons for this with a bolt gun you don't have a high volume of fire so when teaching someone to shoot you have to make each shot count, the others are just practical we reloaded and the property we shot at didn't want empty brass everywhere. Always love the videos keep up the good work!

  9. At 100 yards I would much rather have the semi auto…But when your pushin range and your shot placement really counts, (law enforcement, military, competition) thats when precision really matters..I get what your saying though do most civilians really need one? probably not..But even if you dont serve they are fun to shoot and try to get good at…Good vid Wound
