AR vs. AK comparison with champion shooter, Jerry Miculek: Part 1

Jerry gives us a comprehensive breakdown of the two systems and shows us some of the pros and cons of each platform. The American made AR-15 (or M16 and M4) designed by Eugene Stoner and the Soviet AK-47 (or the more modern AK-74) designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov. The rifles used in the shooting portion of the video are an AK-74 style rifle shooting a 5.45×39 and an M4 Carbine style rifle shooting a 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington. The AK-74 was chosen for being a more modern style of the rifle that is more closely comparable to the AR style cartridge.

  1. As a newbie, AK is very intuitive. All the controls are instantly known to me. I or anyone can pick it up and start shooting. AR? It’s quite complicated looking, it’s more tacticool than useful.

  2. I'm literally ready to buy my first semi-auto rifle. And I am so damn torn on which platform to get. I'll probably end up with an AR just because of parts available. But I'll be honest. Very intrigued by the 7.62×39 round

  3. All this bout AR15 not.Being reliable and having issues with it in Vietnam is 50% bullfeces & 50% true. In truth, it was da militarys fault they were being cheap and givin them magazines that wouldnt help feed rite and da ammo they were using was causing alot of da malfunctioning. Its true da AK47 is more reliable in harsh conditions but it too has had malfunctions during war time and soldiers that were carrying M16's were hittin more badguys wasting less ammo than da soldiers that carried AK47's in 3round bursts or fully auto da AR15 or M16 is more accurate. They are both easy to maintain if u knw ur battle rifle and have had proper training with it. I own one of ea. Ive put all Magpul on both. Buttstock, grip, foregrip, mags, etc. I didnt put a scope or red dot on either one. I have iron sights on both. I like shootn em that way & like da way they look. I have my A2frnt sight & fde/magpul rear sight on my AR15. Same with my AK47. With magpul instead of da original woodstock it has helpd makn it lighter & easier to shoot or handle thats my opinion. And looks alot sexier also my opinion. On my AR15 its all FDE & on da AK its ODG. Its true also bout da AR feeling like an old prostitute but it functions great very accurate & alot lighter than da AK47 its because of da alluminum and polymar that its made of unlike da steel and wood stock da AK47 has. But u dnt have to worry bout da AR15 fallin apart or breakin. Its very durable. Id prefer da AR15 as my battle rifle but if shtf & da AK47 is da 1st one in my sight to grab and shoot, then that'll be my battle rifle till it gets pryed out of my cold dead hands.

  4. Everyone call your senator today and tell them to DECRIMINALIZATION THE OWNERSHIP OF THE AK 94
AK 94 is much better than the AK 47
    BOTH ARE GREAT RIFLES EXCEPT
WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO OWN BETTER WEAPONS WITH TIME AND, TECHNOLOGY.

  5. To the fuck face who thinks the Ak is better than Ar 15 .I challenge you to a fight to death usong my ar , and ypur ak 47. Except this dath match pr shut the hell up. Motjer Fucket dont you ever day thay shot again! If you got balls take the feath challenge. I eat terrorist with my ar respect the weapon you pussy.

  6. This is the fairest AR/AK test I have seen yet. Not that it is perfect, it is by far the most evenly conducted.
When humans get emotional about a favorite subject, they tend to get defensive and picky.
MOST tests involve a tricked out AR against a battlefield pick up, old school AK47.
These guns seem pretty evenly evolved and fairly equipped.
I did notice that when you shot one rifle on the fast five portion, you looked downward where the barrel pointed at the start.
Then on the other rifle, you did two quick mounts and then kept eyes on the target before mounting the rifle.
But, overall, you were pretty good. Thanks Jerry for a good video!

  7. Sorry. I didn't realize that there was an actual AK-74. I thought that you'd mistaken it for the AK-47, but nay. The AK-74 is a 5.45X39 mm round, whereas the AK-47 is a 7.62 X 39mm round. I'll have to check this AK-74 out more closely.

  8. Quite informative. I think the other thing that you have to mention when it comes to the AK, it is sent to armies that the US never used to supply originally, so they didn't have the armoury and machining tools that western armies would have available. Also most western armies won't be having their repair shops bombed by air or artillery so the AK system has to be almost unbreakable. Now put that AR up against a nice L1A1 SLR 🙂
