This gun is highly touted in many quarters, including big YouTube gun channels that seem to love. Also many “tactical” and regular gun magazines have weighed in to say the CMMG Mutant is THE go to 7.62x39mm AR. Time for TNP to weigh in. We fully expected the MK47 to dominate the drills and impress us. It didn’t. While it showed great accuracy at times, the Mutant consistently gave us problems (watch vid for details) making it the worse gun tested in awhile. Various magazines and ammos were shot. I even got a replacement upper for this Mutant and RE-tested it. It was even worse. The Mythbusters example given is funny but it is totally a player here. The gun does show promise and maybe can be perfected but after two years on the market it appears this has not happened yet.

  1. It is a complete gun people should expect working product for hundreds of dollars.

Unrelated though ATI omnimax brand new gas block not dimpled and came loose during firing.

Lazy screw ball on a friday night me thinks.

  2. I'm with you . These guns should run flawless out of the box! What's the point in paying high-dollar if you're not going to receive a quality product. And for that matter, if everyone has the answers to fixing the multitude of problems associated with this gun, why doesn't the manufacturer take those points of interest and apply them in manufacturing?

  3. Something crazy. IraqVeteran8888 recently posted a video of him running a CMMG Mutant full auto non stop for 1255 rounds until the gas tube failed. This was with no stoppages at all except a couple drum mag snafus.

  4. the first thing is the gas system of the mutant is not good, the round is really hot, and it bends etc. that is why the AK has the gas system it has cause is reliable. this is just pure bad idea.

  5. Hey Nut did you tear it apart and see if the gas block was loose?
One of the the other channels put the gun through a 1000 round torture test. Had 2 failed ejections when he tore it down to clean it the gas block screws were loose and it moved somewhat…..

  6. This rifle gave me problems even with the mag it came with ,all FTE or double loading I tried tapco and pmag but then I tried the a Romanian 75 drum and it fed flawlessly I shot 1000rds with no issue wolf ammo with a drum mag .. so I only will use drum mags with it I will try a Bakelite mag soon but … yea for 1500 dollars it should eat like an Ak I wouldn't say a fail considering a lot if not most ARs are picky but I am disappointed 😔 with mk47 …I should of got the galile ace

  7. During the space race to the moon the USA spent 20 MILLION dollars to develop a ball point pen that worked in zero gravity. The Russians just used a pencil………..
Want to shoot 7.62×39 buy an AK. Hell you can have one of Jim Fullers AK's (best USA modified AK's that all the US spec-ops and contractors use) for the cost of the Mutant.
Wait did I just collude with Russians?………………

  8. Do a review on the Psa ks47 mine has been impressive so far very reliable the only trouble is a lil mag wobble and rub with can prevent you from using your mag as a rest but the ultimag magazines fit perfect in it and do not wobble or give any trouble I love mine I have only fired 1,000 rounds threw it tho with one ammo malfunction can't complain on my part but I haven't seen any real reviews on it yet

  9. In my experience with the mutant, the gun ran reliably, even with steel, once I ditched the tapco/magpul mags. I haven't experienced a single malfunction in 1200rds using Bulgarian surplus mags. Maybe eveyone has experienced something different with this gun, just something worth noting that noticed.

  10. After shopping around for a hybrid seeing feeding issues on psa, and some bolt faces getting tore up, then not having enough $ for others I decided to get the mutant. I did watch this vid and the 2nd visit and totally respect your reviews but crossed my fingers. After one of the youtubers torture test I saw some possible issues to look for. 200 rounds in the first one showed which is the rail creeping forward. Decided to check the other which was the gas block loosening up. Didn't have a problem there Loctite the rail bolts and no problems to report 500 rounds in. Seen some surplus mag feeding issues but easy to fix and pmags work fine. Would love to see a review of a working mutant for you. Would like a good opinion on proper optic as well. Keep the vids coming and keep them full retards in check!!!

  11. Just bought a t model mutant and fired around a hundred rounds of remington 7.62 with no problems whatsoever right out of the box. Liked how it shot a lot. hmmm, guess time will tell.
