What’s The Difference Between AR and M4?

To be honest, I don’t know what is the main difference by A&M for I know the size but it’s the most confusing. It’s almost looks like an M-16 or an M4. What is the most confusing? I’m not focusing on the the stock or the trigger or the gearbox I forgot what is it called but the barrel is like most different than the other rifles of M4 M 16. And AR right now. A few days ago I just turned 18. I was thinking to buy a firearm, maybe an M4 or an M-16 but at what I sell the law of state California I had to get an AR 15. I’ve been searching and searching. What is the main difference?

Tye difference between the 2 is an ar15 I’d the rifle name and it’s semi auto, m16/m4 is the military designation name just like the sig p320 is called m17 or the new sig rifle is the sig spear, but military name is m7. Plus the fact an m4/m16 is select fire we’re the ar15 is not. You will never see a select fire ar15 unless it has an m16 select fire lower. Made before 1986. Or it’s a ffl demo lower. Otherwise the only select fire ar15 you will see is one stamped m4/m16 in the military
