As a new legislative session begins in Connecticut, it certainly feels like Groundhog Day again as Gov. Ned Lamont unveiled his latest swipe at law-abiding gun owners. The state’s Chief Executive came out of the blocks fast this year with Governor’s Bill HB-5043 which would ban “convertible pistols.” It is already illegal to convert a gun into an automatic firearm. However, under this legislation, “convertible pistol” is defined in such a way that an entire class of commonly-owned firearms would become illegal and banned. To say that this legislation is on shaky constitutional footing would be an understatement. If HB-5043 is enacted, possessing such a firearm would result in a Class D felony. If would take effect on July 1, 2026.
This bill has been referred to the Judiciary Committee, however, a hearing has not been scheduled. It is early in the legislative session, but Connecticut NRA members should be ready to answer the call if and when this bill begins to move. NRA-ILA is closely monitoring this legislation.
