Yesterday, January 12th, the North Carolina House of Representatives rescheduled the veto override vote on Senate Bill 50, Freedom to Carry NC, to February 9, 2026. NRA will continue monitoring developments closely as lawmakers prepare to reconsider the bill.
S50 would recognize your right to carry a concealed firearm for self-defense without seeking government permission by eliminating the requirement that law-abiding gun owners obtain a permit to carry. Simply put, if you qualify for a North Carolina carry permit, you would be able to carry under S50.
The NRA has long advocated for policies that respect individual liberty, strengthen self-defense rights, and treat lawful gun owners with the trust they deserve. Across the country, states that adopted constitutional carry have reaffirmed that responsible Americans should not have to ask permission to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
The Senate successfully overrode the Governor’s veto of S50 back in July, and the House now needs to approve the override by the required three-fifths majority of those present and voting for S50 to become law.
