Smyth Busters: AR-10 vs AR-308 – What's the Difference?

Brownells Gun Techs Caleb and Steve are sharp as new thumb tacks and even more adept at bursting balloons of firearm misinformation. Today they tackle the notion that any AR-type rifle chambered in 7.62 NATO or .308 Winchester is an AR-10. Many people who think they own an “AR-10” actually have what’s generically called an “AR-308”. The AR-10® is a specific rifle made by the Armalite® company, which owns the AR-10® name as a registered trademark. So ONLY that Armalite rifle can be legitimately called an AR-10®. (“AR-15” is a non-trademarked, public domain designation for the smaller rifle usually chambered in 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington.) The big deal for an AR-308 owner is that AR-10® parts are NOT necessarily interchangeable with parts for the DPMS LR-308 or other AR-308 rifles. Significant differences include the upper receivers, barrel extensions, handguard mounts, bolt headspacing, gas tubes, and buffers. The fire control groups, dust covers, pistol grips, muzzle devices, and receiver extensions (buffer tubes) WILL interchange, as will the magazines (except for some very old AR-10s that used FN FAL mags). If you own an AR-10®, Armalite will be your main source for parts, though some aftermarket parts makers do offer AR-10® specific handguards and the like. One problem is that some makers of AR-308 components are careless and say their parts are for the “AR-10”. Have you had compatibility problems with AR-10 vs AR-308 parts? Tell us about it in the comments!

  1. I'm all confused 🥴 man. So maybe you can help me I want to build a 8.6 blackout and a 308 it sounds like an apparently I can't use the same lower for two different uppers I'm glad I washed your show I think. I was under the assumption that 1 AR-10 lower will cover multiple calibers kind of like the AR-15 please help. 🥴

  2. That was very useful for me. I am in the middle of a conversation with my BF about why his "AR-10" is not grouping. I am very familiar with AR 15s, M 16s and M 4s but I have never shot or cleaned an AR 10 or for that matter, what I now know is an "AR .308". This was super helpful. Many Thanks.

  3. Who cares? Yes, you should know that a true Armalite is the only real AR 10, but people use "AR 10" as shorthand, not fact. This is almost pointless.
If someone didn't know this they shouldn't own either platform

  4. Can you go into more depth thays different in the arma lite vs dpms gas system. I'd like to know. I have a dpms style lr308 and would like to know the difference in gas tube lenth in midlength setup

  5. That is the biggest problem because I’m doing AR 10 bills and those companies are idiots. They labeled their AR 308 as AR 10 I even called him. I told him I actually have a AR 10 not a AR 308 and they’d say they’re the same no they’re not like you said you explained it well they need to be stopped the false advertising but when I contact your company, customer care which are the nicest people in the world and knowledgeable you guys sent me on the right path. This is why I will continue to do business with y’all. You guys been good to me since I was a young teenager with my dad our family will always do business with you guys. You really throw midway out of the water.

  6. I'm building an Aero Precision M5E1 with a 18" barrel and a RifleSpeed adjustable gas block.

As a Marine Corps vet, videos like this keep me up at night because I'm always expecting things to go wrong.

I pray my Fail Zero BCG will run fine in this rifle. 😳

  7. So, is there a difference in performance between the AR-10 and the AR-308?

Is one more expensive then the other?

Are parts more expensive on one than the other?

Why would I buy one over the other?

  8. This is exactly why I’m not going to piece together and build an AR in 308. I’m just going to buy a complete rifle from one manufacturer, slap on a bipod, sight, and call it a day.

I wonder why Armalite didn’t patent the AR15 name then.

  9. I wanted an AR 10 so I went to the gun store and discovered that they’re not all created equal. I did not purchase I went home. Did some homework and looked into what the military used and it was the M110 and I bought in genuine Armalite AR 10 that is compatible with that rifle but semi auto.

  10. My Bud has a Colt rifle in 308, he has purchased a Radian Raptor charging handle AR-10/SR 25 it didn't fit,He bought a Geissele,it didn't fit.He nor I could figure out what the Hell is going on? Anyone? is this Colt a AR308?

  11. Its the exact same as with the ar15 no other company can call theirs an ar15 except colt. They still hold the name just the same as armalite still hold the names rights to the ar10. The ar15 is just more standardized cause the patent expired. So if anyone says they have an ar15 except for a colt, it is not.

  12. It looks like the AR-10 in the video is the AR-10B judging from the looks of the magwell angle. I have a (legit) AR-10 but AR-10A pattern which accepts the Magpul 7.62 magazines. Now, here's the thing… many critical AR-10A and AR-10B parts are not interchangeable almost like how AR-308 and AR-10 are different as explained in the video. I am not familiar with AR-308 so I am wondering if the AR-308 and AR-10A patterns have more interchangeable parts? This compatibility conundrum is the reason why I have not made any significant attempts to improve my AR-10 or buy new parts for it. Nice thing is the current owners of Armalite have kept the AR-10 alive and there's a ton of parts for them it seems.
