How To Use the Vortex Dead-Hold BDC Reticle

This video is a tutorial showing how to effectively use the Vortex Optics Dead Hold BDC reticle in the field.

Make sure to pay careful attention to the caliber you are shooting and which category it fits into in the Dead-Hold BDC manual, since trajectories can perform very differently over distance. Also, make sure to validate the ballistics of the specific rounds you will be firing in order to be aware of any difference in trajectory between your rounds and the trajectory suggested by the BDC holdover points.

  1. Hey, if it works, it works. I use a Burris with ballistic plex reticle, and it works damn well for many cartridges. Wondering what the subtensions are on this reticle??? You don't see the guys at Vortex talking about this one anymore. I like this video, as this is exactly how I use my Burris FFII 3-9×40 with ballistic plex reticle. Good info. Too bad you don't hear about these Vortex scopes anymore.. Great video, for a 12 year old video. Still very informative, and it shows the reticle, and the bullet impact. Well done!!

  2. I just bought this scope and was hoping to have larger hash marks than what they are. The hash marks are very small and difficult to see for my 48 year old eyes. They are nowhere near the size of illustration.

  3. I always find these Vortex videos very concise. I used to work at a local Cabela's and trust me, every scope that I have is Vortex. I have attended a few Vortex Seminars at work. Even tho I was in Fishing, everyone was included if they wanted to attend. And I still have a couple of Vortex pens, Hahaha. BTW, they work as well as the Scopes do.

  4. The Vortex BDC tool sucks balls. Burris provides a much better one in which you can build a table of distances and power settings to cover all hunting contingencies. Vortex only includes data by extraction for the highest power setting based on MOA from their ballistics chart calculator. Talk about low achievers.

  5. I have a Vortex Viper HD 2-10 with the dead hold BDC mounted on a Ruger Ranch Rifle in 7.62×39. Using Wolf 124 gr FMJ (loaded by Barnaul) which I have chronographed out of this rifle, when sighted in at 200 yards the holds are good for 250 (1.5" low), 300 (.06" high), 350 (1.05" high), and 400 yards (3" high). With a 10 mph full value cross wind, the windage holds are 3.3 moa at 200 yards, 4.2 at 250, 5.2 at 300, 6.3 at 350, & 7.5 moa at 400 yards. So both the windage holds and elevations holds are quite useful. I played around with a ballistics calculator to figure out the zero I wanted to use to get the most out of the reticle for my purposes and based on my elevation, temperature, and humidity. https://shooterscalculator.com/ballistic-trajectory-chart.php?t=b4cbf599

  6. BDC reticles are nothing more than a sales gimmick. Sure they’ll work if you put in the work. But the way scope manufacturers market them people think you mount them sight in at 100 yards and you’re set to shoot 600 yards. Meanwhile with my ELR rifle I chrono a specific load then doing the math then verifying on the range then creating a dope card and that data is only valid for that exact load. So many things go into shooting long range. Yes a BDC will work but real world gimmick that best case a missed animal worst case a wounded animal.

  7. I dunno, I'm no expert, but this seems kinda janky.

What's wrong with knowing your distances with MOA or Mil marks? This seems like it's trying to simplify something, that isn't really simplified that easily.

  8. Great explanation. My question is in a sfp scope what magnification are you shooting from. Is that at max, min, or does the caliber class identify with a specific magnification? You video is missing what power your viewing from.
Again great video and can't wait to mount my crossfire on my 270

  9. It’s about time I understand what the hash marks can do. It’s simple. I was getting so confused with people saying you have to go up so many clicks and dialing things up. Thanks for clarifying. And not complicating things
