Theres also an option of .22 as well theres nothing else that gives you the most bang for your buck in terms of storage. For the size and weight of it you can really carry a lot and store a lot. This is for the “grab and go” people you can really both grab and store and move a lot of .22 both guns and ammo really quickly. The heavier ammos are all going to be heavier and probably split into different containers or bags, however you logistically slice this its more efficient to grab your .22 stuff altogether as that system can sustain yourself far far longer than anything else you’ll bring. Your guns and ammo are utilities and are pretty necessary we aren’t just gonna lie here, but how long you can run them and support yourself matters as the army marches on it’s stomach so there is indeed some value to never ending .22lr even if the round is super anemic you can have thousands of rounds of it and essentially a never ending supply of it. It won’t defeat everything and definitely isnt the best thing to defend yourself with but for sustainability it’s not a stupid decision at all, it’s the most sustainable option available, you’ll be shooting .22 long after your other calibers have ran dry.
Edit
TLDR
.22LR is a decent alternative for something sustainable. The ammo is lightweight and small making it easier to transport or carry. 1,000 rounds of 9mm, is roughly 30 pounds. For 30 pounds of .22LR, that equates to about 5,000 rounds.
AR. It’s an emergency and everyone is grabbing their things. I believe everyone is going to have either or on them so don’t feel super discouraged if you have an AK for example. I’d say what actually separates is these standard rifles from the more DMR type rifles. That very expensive scar you bought that shoots .308 to 1,000 yards. It’s gonna be hard to find mags for that gun. You shouldn’t be overly concerned about choosing ar or ak at least in America. Others will also have some AR or AKs, and I can imagine every other person would have a handgun, so ammo is probably exchangeable or trade-able, interchangeable. I imagine the amount of 12 gauge both the shotguns and ammo youd find and see would be massively common. The best things aren’t always the best things they are just what you have or what’s around. I know for certain if no one has ammo for my AR someone may have 9mm ammo for my handgun. But all of these calibers are incredibly prevalent in the US.
I personally would like to the the AK but I’m sure if “shit hits the fan” I’ll be able to get/find more 556/223 that 762. So I am going with the AR unless the AK is a 556 but only cause of the ammo
The AR and I think you know it . More availability to capture ammo , mags , and supplies to get that gun to keep running as long as you are breathing . Which is huge . 2nd , it is a more accurate weapon . If you capture some nods , you can attach an IR laser . The AK is never going night vision capable in SHTF. That’s just a few reasons . And before the 15 year that plays COD chimes in and embarrasses they self , I have AKs .. two Alphas in fact . I love them . I love the AK and the 7.62×39 round . It DOES have its place . But trust me , the advantages of running an AR weapons system in This country in SHTF are innumerable.
Im grabbing my 10.3” AR pistol because it has an eotech, back-up iron sights, light with pressure pad, has better ergonomics and handling, and only weighs 8.6lbs loaded; while the 10.5” AK-Pistol weighs 9.2lbs loaded with basic irons and no flashlight 🤷🏽♂️! The AK is for turning “cover” into “concealment”, or dropping 3 zombies at a time in the zombie apocalypse!😂
Either ammo is readily available in the US… But let's be honest here the AK style is for hip fire as the AR is for tactical me personally I count my shots so I'm going AR all day cause I hit what I shoot at

AK
I don’t own many so in a shtf scenario I’m taking all of them 😂 no guns get left behind
Ar nevshot a ak
AR
AR because that AK has no stock and if shtf I need accuracy and availability of ammo to be a benefit
Ak because of its caliber and grip
AK
AK don't have to stop and clean it
AK all day
Both but I’d have to choose, it’s the AR….. there’s probably gonna be more 2.23/5.56 than AK rounds available
EITHER
Ar that midget ak be a jiggaboo gun

Ak pistol no buffer tube is always a winner in pistol format
More 556 AMMO THAN 7.62. AR ALL DAY #dressed2kill
AK all the way is what I say!
I dont have an AK pistol so the ARP it is.

Ak pistol. Most durable between the two
AR higher velocity ammo is easier to find And also easier to clean
I’m feeling the AK out of the two setups you have. Shorter barrel, I like the tactical grip and accessories. Not to mention, 7.62😅
