AR-15 vs. Handgun: Home Defense Showdown!

I’ve always said the AR-15 is the best home defense gun, and this story proves it. 🐻💥

When a bear charges into your house, you don’t want to be hoping a couple handgun rounds will do the job. You want something that ends it now. That’s why the AR is a force multiplier.

But I know people love to debate this—handgun, shotgun, or rifle—so tell me: what are YOU grabbing if a bear breaks into your house? 👇

  1. To the point of AR's for home defense, i just remembered that an AR can be anything, whether pistol, rifle, or shotgun. It can even be a crossbow. Or a flare launcher. Or a potato cannon. Or a .50 bolt-action. Of course most of these, you wouldn't use for home defense. But something to think about.

  2. I’m an AR-15 fan for home defense (suppressed pistol with 55 grain rounds). That said, I conceal carry 9 mm pistol all day until I go to sleep. Why? What I’m carrying at the time beats what I have to fight to get to in a home defense scenario. I totally agree with earlier post; home defense should be layered, to include video cameras, good dead bolt locks, and an active alarm system. Your phone should also be close by so you can call 911.

  3. For a more likely intruder that's not 500+ pounds and hairy, I oftentimes ask myself if I would pick up my 1022 semi and have 10 fast rounds x3 or a 20ga pump. I wouldn't use a 12ga loaded with buckshot in my house or anything larger than a 9mil for over penetration reasons. Still can't decide. Yes, I COULD go get an AR or handgun, but if im working with what I already have, I guess I'll have to wait and hope I never need to actually make that choice.

Edit: Any shotgun in a home is waking everyone up and is most likely going to be very loud and disorienting to the shooter.

  4. Thing is, if you live in an area with bear activity, HAVE BEAR AMMO. Buffalo Bore makes bear loads for 45 acp and it is VERY effective. Ron Spomer even did a video on it and it was actually amazing how well the projectile went through the intended targets.

  5. His comment on 9mm over penetration only applies to ball ammo. Anyone using 9mm for self defense should absolutely be using quality hollow points. Otherwise, over penetration of the bad guy is definitely a problem. Ball ammo negates all the technological advances in pistol ammo.
