Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I’ve seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Glass is the last thing to consider. Spend what you can and make do. The gun only shoots where you point it, and optics arent going to help you point better.
Buy what you can afford and train with it. Ive taken at least 100 deer with my dad's Bushnell Banner 4x that's been strapped to the Marlin 336 (.35rem) for the last 50 years. Rifle made in 1976, scope in 1978.
Make do with what ya got. Our ancestors didn't have Zeiss scopes with illuminated reticles. Youll be alright
The most expensive scope you can afford.
Redfield is good
There is no reason to spend $3000 on a scope.Arken scopes are just as good and they charge a reasonable price.
For 3k the scope better let me bullet trace my target😂
Vortex pst viper is a great scope i have a few of them
I just bought a Bushnell R3 extended eye relief scope, does anyone have any experience with it?
Scope mounting question. Lapping scope rings, when to lap, why to lap, how to properly lap? On YouTube, there are many videos from creators and rarely is there any lapping in their scope installation process. There are creators saying that lapping will do more damage than help. Your thoughts?
$300 savage 308 and $110 sig sauer 3x9x50 scope when I pull the trigger something dies sure I want to own a high dollar optic but no need to for what my needs are
I remember when a 1 inch tube was standard and 30mm was the big premium option and only extremely expensive scopes had 34mm tubes and proprietary rings. Lol. Speaking of extremely expensive scopes. You do get to a point where a top end scope has been so specialized it's not practical for anything but it's main designated purpose. If you have deep pockets or deep credit and start looking at the most expensive options just to have the best, do realize that your boutique level scopes are going to be mostly niche designs for long range shooting . Probably even from a bench or machine rest where you have a secondary optic mounted to the main optic just to locate your target quickly and then you transition. Very much like a telescope for astronomy. Fantastic, top of the line hunting options will be typically be less than top end target options. No I'm not including night vision, thermal or crossovers. A top end hunting optic will give the best light transmission possible, have edge to edge clarity ,be extremely durable, but it will also be light enough to carry all day and too end magnification won't be much over 12 power and will have a low end that gets you on target fast. You do have many brands to choose from as well. It's no joke when Ron says you need to do your homework for finding a suitable optic.
I’ve really found that middle of the road offers me the best for the type of hunting I do, I don’t generally need exposed turrets to dial, I hate these modern day “busy” reticles, I have no need for illumination due to my states legal hunting hours. I have some higher end ones but for hunting I stay simple and lite lol
You do NOT need an expensive 30mm for day hunting.
I have a bushnell elite 9 power with range finder. A most excellent optic.
Meopta, GPO, Luepold, Trijicon, Burris, Athlon, Sightron, US Optics get my money. EO Tech are tempting. One day I’ll buy a March.
Vortex
I've owned them all best $500 scope zeiss terra
I bought a vortex diamondback to replace a old leopold I had and I could not get it zeroed in I shot 40 rounds through it .I took it back put the old leopold back on zeroed it in 6 rounds .
I've used weaver scopes and shot alot of critters one shot Humm
Ron, what is your opinion on Arken optics? I’ve seen 99% good things about them and they’re relatively inexpensive. I’m looking to buy a scope for my hunting rifle.
30 mm scopes suck if it ain't at least 40 plus it don't go on my gin bigger number more light comes in
Vortex is a great scope for the blue collar shooter/hunter. Great quality.
I have nothing but great things to say about the Arken epl4. It has exposed elevation turrets with a zero stop and a capped windage turret. It has Japanese glass and two different reticles to choose from, in moa or mil. You can get them under $400 and they take a beating and always track true! They’re on the lighter side for being a 30mm scope. They also have 2 different power sizes like one is a 16x and the other is a 24x. The turret is very noticeable at the turn because of the positive clicks, both felt and heard. For an entry level budget, you can’t beat them for western hunting and range shooting. For $300-$400, they worth a try! I promise it will be the first of many you’ll buy! 😅
Swarovski makes the best glass.
I have found vortex is a great scope for the cost.
Leupold.
Why buy an expensive rifle just to slap on a cheap scope??? Why buy a cheap rifle and slap a high dollar scope on it???
I steer away from cheap. If im spending the money i want quality. Otherwise its not worth my time.
🗣️I currently own and use 8 Vortex scopes, no problems.
SEMPER FI 🇺🇸🤠
Vortex.
Athlon great mid tier scope and USO for upper tier.
Swarovski, Vortex, Leopold, Zeiss……..And Then There's Schmidt & Bender!😊😊😊
Buy the best optic you can afford. A couple years from now you won’t miss the extra peso’s you spent, but you’ll damn sure remember going home early from a hunt because your sight dumped on you. Buy once cry once.
Hunted with a Redfield widefield straight 6 on my 30-06 Sako. Now I have Leupold, Weaver, and Nikon. Simple was better.
Not spending 3k on a scope😂😂
Hunted with old school weaver k4 metal tube scopes and a couple of Redfield 3 to 9 variables. Some of my scopes are forty or fifty years old and still going good Weavers was always very accurate an durable. Bought one fancy scope with all the bells and whistles for my favorite long range fire stick. At the end of the day a straight 4 or 6 power and the simplicity is for me. Lot of Luepolds in my family. They have excellent light gathering qualities in low light condition. Better than the weavers in that way
I have owned, Leupold, Nikon, Burris, Zeiss, Redfield, Simmons, Bushnell. I will have to place leupold as my favorite. I could not tell a bit difference between the Leupold and the Zeiss. Other than the massive cost difference.
The problem with guns is like with Guitars, coins, bottles etc. people collect them. And too many people think guns are toys.
With a nice 400 $ scope you can do 0.3 moa at 1000 yards .
Zeiss is great for hunting .
But for target you dont need high end scope .
Only for hunting in low light situation.
My bad millet works great at x12 .
My nikon 6-18 too .
Vortex for me $600-$1200 max
My first high power rifle Remington BDL .300 Win Mag $429, I purchased a Leupold 3 X 12 $530. PA, Kodiak, MT, BC, Sonora Mexico, never needed a cover, never loses 0, worth every penny, cir 1995
All the mfgs can build quality up or down, Tasco may not match Zvarski, but the better guys can certainly build down
Swfa
Give me 1" tubed scopes in general.
Leupold,, period
If you are only ever going to shoot 200 yards or less. Put an ACOG on it, combat tested tough and consistent enough to cause an investigation. For the range listed, you simply cannot do better.
Ron, what’s the minimum amount guy should spend on a reliable scope?
Iron sights and close range hunting for me
Scopes are out of control
Shepard scopes are pretty decent
The average shot at many game animals, is 100-150 yds. So why is a 3000$ scope worth while. AND, the "average" hunter can't hit his ass with both hands out at 300 yds and above.
