A dirty, fouled barrel can destroy the accuracy of any rifle. In this brief video Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, demonstrates the process for properly cleaning a rifle to remove both powder and copper fouling. Using the right tools, this process is easy and effective.

Thanks, very clear explanation
Bend me over Larry. Clean me good.
THANK YOU SO MUCH .
The vendor no longer accepts credit card payment. I hope they didn't go out of business. This is a great tool and I want it 🙂
You think you can do a video on the Tubb throat maintenance system
Do as i say, not as i show
Any issues with false copper readings on brass jags?
Yes but this never is good advice for your slingshot. Your caveman ancestors never did it like that so cut it out.
I don't think I've ever had a clean patch come out after cleaning. I've soaked the barrel with solvent, run the brush more times than I can count for hours, and I still get a dirty patch.
I prefer using Tetra Gun copper solvent and then Eds red as a cleaning solvent and lubricant
So good so nice!
This man is Prof your video doesn't have to be ten minutes to get the information through
Lare Dog!
My cleaning rod always knocks against the insde the of the barrell and I feel like I'm damaging it
Thank you sir for being succinct and spot on. Twelve years on and your vid still reigns at the top, while many 30-minute expert videos are long forgotten….. Cheers
is it ok / proper to reverse the brush in the barrel or do you push the brush all the way out the end of the barrel and then reverse / pull it back to you?
I keep expecting him to say …. "And we'll leave the light on for ya"
What if like CLR whole rifle is dipped in acid (soft or hard based on ur preference) for cleaning
Anything on that
Great tip mate thanks for that
The bolt?
Don't forget to use plastic gloves to keep solvent to skin contact to a minimum and work in a well ventilated area.
I belong to a shooting club and I usually clean my rifles at the outdoor range.
This way my garage stays clear of fumes and the guns are clean before I get home.
Hoppes 9 should never be used on a fire arm. It is made for paintball guns.
A powerful solvent is needed.
Only a gunsmith should perform work 9n a weapon. The average person dose not have the abulitys to do this correctly and will ruin the weapon.
Nice guy but if he could only look into the camera.
I always wondered is it ok to pass the brush back and forth while inside the barrel on one motion, or are you supposed to go all the way out of the end of the barrel and the bull the brush back thru in reverse? I ask because I shoot a 26" barrel and with using a bore guide, my cleaning rod barely makes it all the way out thru the barrel.
The chamber in my rifle is always very dirty also. What is the best way to clean the chamber or does the chamber not require cleaning.
Well done! We really enjoy your videos. If you get some time check out our page. We produce firearm workstations for AR's, Glocks, 1911 and others.
Just bought a Howa M1500, so basically just remove the bolt and clean it as any other rifle. I was alway sketchy running that bronze brush through it in fear of damaging the rifling. I’m using rem oil though, suppose to clean and lubricate the weapon. 2 in 1..
Not a gun owner, just a writer. Thanks!
Some say don’t use a cleaning rod, Larry uses a rod. Larry is a legend so I will too use a rod.
Is this fire marshal bills brother? Letmeshowyasomething
I just pour ever clear down my barrel, then wrap 180 grit sandpaper around a brush and rip it back and fourth about 20 times. Been working great on my Springfield M1a.
Yeah but cant those brushes screw up the crown of the barrell?
Wtf was that outro
I have developed a way of cleaning my barrels faster, I would like to know what you think. I wet the brush and run it back and forth so that the brush mixes the solvent with the fouling. I then put in a dry patch to soak up the dirty solvent. I keep doing this (wet brush dry patch) untill the patches come out clean. I feel putting in a wet patch in will cause the patch to ride over much of the fouling. Then I oil the barrel.
I've ran patches through a barrel until my elbow hurt. I've never had a white patch come out.
He's so happy
Larry is the Man.
Only visit the range once per month with my son. We spend a long time cleaning. I thought we were dedicated but I calculate it would take you one week to do what we do in (cleaning) 3/4 hrs. As for the annoying interuptions from my son cats I keep a water pistol near. Hate long videos, you and Hickok45 are the exxeption. You won a like. Have a nice day.
with gas and shoelace, I make barrels clean like brand new
i heard I'm supposed to clean the barrel of a mosin nagant after shootin
well no wonder some of my rifles shoot around corners… at least I know how to protect my new guns in the future
Thanks. You made it look so simple!!!!
There's a lot more could have been said – I only clean one way the way the projectile goes. Think about it!
