AR-15 Accessory Guide: What do you ACTUALLY need?

Every AR-15 that’s worth a damn really only needs four things. Optic, mags, sling, light. Everything else people attach to their rifles is either optional or unnecessary clutter. In this video I break down the big four, talk about some add-ons that might be worth it, and which ones to leave off, depending on your personal, unique needs. Mission should drive your gear (and your accessories!), not the other way around.

  1. backup irons are still in the conversation. An EMP will knock out most optics. 🤷‍♂️. im not saying put them on all your builds, but if you have a " do all shtf" build, it. needs irons.

  2. I just got a basic 18650 cell flashlight and printed a mount for it that i can unclip really easily. I ran a few mags through it to test it out and haven't had any issues. The only thing it doesn't do is the little momentary button which is fine for me so far.

  3. Almost everyone should start with a red dot+magnifier or LPVO. 2.5-10x+red dot is great but its definitely a specialty rifle optic stack that you should have in addition to a general purpose rifle.

  4. Great vid. I hear everyone say "mission drives the gear" and then they proceed to only talk about the gear. It's difficult to stay within legal boundaries when talking about tactics and scenarios one might need to use a gun, but that still determines the everything from the jump. What mission am I doing that I even need a rifle? That said, if I'm leading a "civilian defensive rifle" class, and the student shows up with the four basics on their AR, I'm happy. We can build from there. There are a lot of choices, but those depend on the role you (and your teammates) need the rifle to fill. So mags, sling, light, and dot or LPVO are non-negotiable. If you know why you need an MPVO, then you are capable of making all the other decisions in a build.
Small gripes: every M/HPVO and prisms over 3x should always be paired with a piggyback dot. The only time your SASS has a 3-18 but no dot/irons is when you are part of a team where others have the equipment for close in security. 99% of civilian defense is going to be solo, even though it shouldn't and that's one of the things that future videos should cover.
Most of this is TMI for getting people to start arming themselves and practice. Everything beyond the 4 basics, a rifle, and a way to carry medical/ammo/water, is another vid. Anyone who is looking at rail covers and ambi controls has already done enough shooting to know why they want them. Fretting over 1- or 2-part slings and various muzzle devices is a waste of time and money that should be put into training. Speaking of training, you'll want something to shoot at. Targets also go in the first tier of gear acquisitions.

  5. I notice you've got the Gearhead Works Tailhook, and as far as comfort and usability, it is by far the best brace, both to use as a brace and as a totally-not-a-stock, unfortunately, I discovered that they leave something to be desired when it comes to ruggedness. Doing a malfunction drill at a class, the dummy round got stuck and required mortaring to clear, and the tailhook snapped…the timing worked out though since it was when the ATF was doing free amnesty stamps for pistols, so I SBRed the thing and got a real stock on it.

With the tax stamp issue, about the only good thing from the big billionaire bill was that stamps are going to be free come January 1st, making suppressors far more viable

  6. I really like the tall red dot mount, and was running a red dot in a 2.26 mount with a flip to center magnifier…but that tall mount sucks for shooting prone.

So I switched to a PA 5x microprism and 12 o'clock mounted Holosun SCS320, soon as a better mounting option that PA's super fragile one became available.

High mounted dot for heads up shooting up close, and low mounted magnified optic for shooting at range

And both can operate without needing to worry about batteries

  7. 1. Prism sights work when the battery is dead, the 1X works like a red dot, a 3X prism gives you a good reach. Skip the rear sight, mark the elevation on your scope instead. With practice, you won't need the most expensive iron sight.
    2. Make sure your guin likes the mags you have! A must imho, 2 10 rounders for training/bench, 2 20 round mags tied together for HD, min 10 30 round mags, 5 loaded with defensive rounds. Forget 40 round, too lng, not very practical
    3. Magpul MS1 sling can be had for $20, then add paraclip, QD, whatever you prefer to the ends. Rub the sling with an oil rag will make it rainproof (a wet sling is a PITA) & operate smoothly.
    4. Good lights are spendy, buy used & most big brands will replace if theres an issue. Don't hesitate to submit a support request on ANYthing weapon related. Most companies are happy to replace.
    5. My 16" rifles have bipods, it's a love/hate relationship but you can make them removable with a QD picatinny or MLok mount on them.
    6. 2026 the stamp cost goes away, some suppressor stores are taking early orders without the $200 charge, like layaway.
    7. I would suggest looting the thermal when the SHTF. It may become more important to defeat thermals than having one.

  8. I’m surprised you have a red dot along with a 3x micro prism. I have the same optic on my 16” AR and it functions more or less as a red dot. In my admittedly limited experience, the magnification is low enough that I’ve been able to use it inside 25 yards without issue. Have you found it more difficult to use closer up?

  9. I had some issues with beating myself back to reason when I bought my first AR-15… fortunately, I didn't end up with crazy ideas of hanging a shittone of stuff on my rifle making it resembling the Christmas tree 😉

With the stuff I like, but aren't necessary I end up with a an enlarged magwell (in fact a magwell grip but I'm using it just as a magwell "funnel") and a barricade stop – just as a kind of forward hand stop to not put my non dominant hand to far on my SBR.

And btw. I love my ambis (mag release, charging handle and the selector) – just because how convenient the rifle is in more "exotic" shooting positions. And I like 45-deg selector way more than a standard 90-deg.

Thanks for another great video, James!

  10. I think my main disagreement is that in my opinion all modern fighting rifles should have some form of magnification and as such a red dot should always be paired with a magnifier.

Even for simple PID these are game changing and there are lots of low cost options.
