Unboxing and installation of a Vortex Defender XL red dot optic on a Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS.

One of the best red dot optics available on the market as of 2025. With the DeltaPoint Pro (DPP) mounting footprint this allows easy mounting to pre existing slide cuts, plates and mounts. It has a very robust design and feel to it giving confidence in its reliability. The buttons have a great tactile feel and are conveniently positioned. A wide brightness settings range including night vision. The optic has a relatively low profile allowing you to co witness iron sights or use the built in notch at the rear of the housing. The front serrated face not only looks cool, it is very functional allowing for a great surface to rack the slide on. The very innovative battery system on this is probably what sets it apart, it is a clever design allowing positive battery contact and easy battery changes. Not that it needs it because of the intelligent electronic wizardry that incorporates auto shutoff, shake awake and the like to save and lengthen the CR2032 battery life. To round it off the optic comes in great well laid out packaging with a logical user manual. All in all a really great optic.

A bonus is the amount of extras you get out the box. Included is a Glock MOS plate along with mounting hardware to fit the optic to literally any pistol.

This dot is reliable. Haven’t heard much failures or problems with the Defender XL. I have one frame mounted on an open gun with a steady diet of major power factor ammo. The other is slide mounted on a Glock with factory and reloaded ammo. No problems on both platforms.
