  1. just for clarity you should change title as AR-15 isnt a M4/M16, I have 5 AR15 in 5 different calibers 5.56, 300BO, 7.62×39, 6.5 grendel and 450 BM and 50 yards works for 3ish as 300bo prefer 36 subsonic, 6.5 is 100 and 450 BM is 200yds

  2. For more info Delta34 might have the best 2-part video on the best zero taking EVERYTHING into consideration including height over bore, mount height ammo weight and the best explanation period.

  3. Was trained and used 25m zero after the army for 20yrs now. However after getting into LEO and using a Patrol Rifle, It has been a shift in my thinking of a Patrol Rifle vs Combat Rifle. I now use a 50m zero 100m shots are only 2cm high and 200-300m are dropping off well within the belt line of a torso.

  4. 36 is the best general purpose/ battle zero. You basically don't have to use any kind of holds from 25-300 yards and your impact will always be within about a 3- 6 moa group. If you want precision then that's when the holds and longer zeros come into play.

  5. For general use, I'm in the 50 yard zero camp. I do use other zeroes for other specific uses, but for just general purpose, I like to zero to 50.

EDIT: I forgot to note that that is for iron sights. I rarely use optics, as I used to have to qualify with iron sights when I was in the Marines (late 80's to early 90's). For most open field uses, I would zero at 100, then adjust windage/elevation as needed. It's math, but it's easier when you can manually adjust your elevation. For optics, I do the same for 'open field' use but return the zero to 50 for other uses with or without optics. Of course, it should be noted that the M16 A2 which was used at the time had a 20 inch barrel.

  6. Height over bore makes a big difference. There are some very good videos on YouTube that talk about the different crossover points at different barrel lengths and height over bore. I've personally landed on irons at 25yd. Lower 1/3 red dot at 50yds. 1.93-2.25" high red dot at 100yd. Magnified optics depends on the optic.

  7. 50-200 is probably the most common for law enforcement or self defense of close quarters battle , because your common engagement distance in any fire fight is usually 100meters for a soldier, but for Leo you talking about 10-100 meters.

  8. A regular civilian wont find themselves in a situation where they'll need to shoot more than 10 to 25 yards. Remember, training is to evacuate if possible and dont engage til the end. Either way, most won't hit with dot and / or scope. Either way, because of the lack of training.

  9. It’s not 50 yards / 200 yard zero it’s 50 yards / 200 meters. Look up Santos 50 yard zero that’s almost a 19 yard difference. 200 meters = 218.723 yards. It always bugs me people say 50/200yds when it isn’t.
