On Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee passed House Study Bill 262, legislation that will lower the age to obtain a concealed carry permit to 18 years old. The bill now heads to the House floor where it is eligible for a vote.

HSB 262: Currently, under Iowa law, an individual must be 21 years or older to apply for a non-professional concealed carry permit. HSB 262 would lower that age to 18 years old. Given that recent court rulings have stated 18-20-year-olds cannot be barred from carrying for self-defense, the Iowa legislature is proactively trying to address this issue.
