Had an ex sniper say he doesn't do that so if he had to move rifle aim to his side due to a threat, he has more control/better grip to moving his rifle to the threat. Just a thought.

Also, blood pumps pretty hard through the thumb and this affects the stability of the rifle for longer distances
Maybe the same for handguns. Many of my shots are Slightly left and low because of tendency to not isolate trigger finger I think.
