Tony & Chelsea Northrup review Nikon‘s new retro DX mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z fc ($1,100 at They compare it against a used Fujifilm X-T3 ( an old favorite with analog dials for the aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Tony has some gripes about the Zfc’s controls because they still require you to use the traditional P/A/S/M camera modes.

The Northrup’s then compare the Z fc vs iPhone because it’s the most popular consumer camera in the world. They check still image quality in both good light and low-light. They compare the dynamic range and video quality of both the front and back cameras. They also review the video stabilization when walking.

  1. I have a Fujifilm X-T2 with the 18-50mm kit lens. I do enjoy the camera very much, but was considering switching to a Z fc due to hearing that Canon lenses convert better to Nikon than Fujifilm (wife has a Canon R7 and we have invested in quality EF mount Sigma lenses and it would be nice to share them. Does anyone have thoughts or experience in this area?

  2. I'm a huge fuji fan, and I e always been I terested in nikon. I thought the zfc would make me switch, but that's a huge no. I ha e an xt20, and it's good enough for all I do. Umm if it had an ibis I may give it a second consideration because I do use older lenses. But idk if even that would make me switch lol

  3. I'm still trying to find the joy in photography. Got back into it with Fuji (X-E2 then Pro-2), and I loved it. But after a big time case of G.A.S, I sold that kit and got into the Canon R6. It's been ok and the images are nice, but it's so big and heavy by comparison (especially with the 24-105 f/4) that I rarely take it out except on special occasions. Now I'm looking at these two, but the Fuji (now X-T4) is the clear choice for me. Honestly, I don't care about specs, full-frame vs APSC, etc… I just want to have fun and be motivated to get out and shoot every day.

  4. I’m new but confused…I thought ‘priority’ mode meant the one you chose ‘aperture, shutter etc’ would be on auto and you controlled the other two….not that the mode you chose is the ONLY one you can chose and the other two are on auto..??

  5. I would say that if you are using aperture priority mode and know that the shutter speed is too low, you should be using Manual anyway. It's one more thing to control, and you don't really adjust the aperture that often anyway. I think he was clutching at straws with his critiques.

  6. Caution! I recently downloaded firmware for the Zfc from Nikon. When I hit the upload, the camera shut itself down and would not restart. Nikon support told me it would have to be sent to a service center. I mailed it, at my expense. After a week, I got an estimate for repair. Almost $ 300.00. This camera was just over one year old, purchased directly from Nikon and had less than 1,000 actuations. The camera worked perfectly until I tried to upload the firmware. Note – I own over two dozen Nikon cameras including four Z series and I am very familiar with the update procedure. Has anyone else had this problem?

  7. This is an incredibly misleading video. The iPhone 12 Pro Max uses AI to adjust exposure and to lift shadows. You could probably edit the Nikon photos to look similar. It's worth mentioning the f-stop, shutter speed, and ISO aren't equal. So, you underexposed the shot with the Nikon ZFC and then complained that it was too dark compared to the iPhone. You had some odd landscape photos that were shot with a really wide aperture and it caused a lot of the picture to be out of focus.

For anyone interested in the most relevant difference between the Fujifilm X-T3 and the Nikon ZFC its the lens ecosystem. The Fujifilm glass is superior but it's more expensive. If you're an amateur on a budget the Nikon is the better choice even though the bodies are similarly priced. If you're a semi-professional / aspiring amateur or you have a large budget then Fujifilm is a better choice but neither system is great if you don't spend on lenses.

  8. I agree with Chelsea about the kit lens, it's too slow. I don't like the idea of having to up the ISO just to make up for a too slow lens. I'm about to receive, from B&H, a Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 lens designed specifically for Z mount APS-C. It has an aperture ring, a distance scale, and a DOF scale. And it's even manual focus with a hard infinity stop, so I'll have the full retro experience now with my Z fc. I'm still shooting film with my 45 year old Pentax MX so I know what I like regarding camera and lens features. Some may think the Voigtlander is a bit expensive to put on a Z fc but it is still the case that the lens is far more important than the camera.

  9. I just love my new Z fc! Even the kit lenses 16-50 and 50-250 are gorgeous! I can't wait to get hold of the not-yet-announces 200-600.

    BUT: There also are issues.

I deposited the follwing requests for upcoming firmware updates with Nikon:

° User modes! My >10yr old COOLPIX P7000 already knew three user modes U1-U3 where I was able to save complete sets of settings. Very handy!
° Display histogram and horizon simultaneously
° Be able to enter arbitrary focus lengths in the non-CPU section (There is but a choice: 1200mm, 1400mm and guess what: My Maksutov has 1300.)
° Be able to switch on the camera when powered via USB, even with battery removed.
    ° Support DNG raw format

Any support for my requests would be highly appreciated!

  10. Some interesting mistakes made in this comparison. You're SPOT with those dial observations! WOW How did Nikon miss that?! It is why I stuck with the Z50 over the Zfc even though I wanted the flippy screen. No user modes and no easier way to turn auto-ISO on or off. Unbelievable flaw Nikon. Not to mention no aperture ring (like Sony primes offer,) on the SE lenses.

8:20 matrix metering is doing what it is supposed to, but there are settings to adjust for this, and my Z50/Z30 have no trouble in green/auto correcting exposure with strong back lighting. HDR should have been used for the product photos. As well as 12:21 using 50mm instead of 16mm. It is VERY clear that camera companies need to step up their game to remain competitive with smartphones.

It seems odd to limit the Zfc to the kit lens, as that is the whole point of a camera than accepts other lenses. I use the 24-50 with extension tubes for macros (very cheap used items.) I'm even adapting Sony prime lenses to my APS-C bodies because the adapter is smaller than the FTZ.

However, after all that, IMO the real magic of Nikon's APS-C cameras it the 50-250DXVR lens. You can shoot 2-3 vertical images to get wider photos from it and stitch; even for group photos.

  11. It would also be useful to shoot a HDR photo with the Nikon built-in HDR feature. It's quick to turn on and in that case the results would be superior to a smartphone.
Also, if there is any movement in a photo, smartphone photos quickly fall apart as they can't take enough shots to calculate a sharp and low noise end-result. That's the reason I still use a dedicated camera indoors and especially with a flash.

  12. Iphone looks better than the raw files of Nikon. This means something. Let me say this. Zfc is a nice looking an attractive camera. But, compared to something like an Iphone, which is ahead of its time, Zfc is a dumb camera. By itself, it's Zfc is an attractive camera.

  13. I almost bought the Zfc when I got back into photography this summer. At the time, I hadn't paid any attention to cameras for 20 years and the only thing I knew about the new crop of cameras is that they also have video. I just loved the look of the Nikon.

  14. iPhone sucks ass. REAL cameras will always be better. Actually not going to upgrade to a new “smart phone” after this one. I’ll just keep buying refurbished. Looking into getting a camera and taking nice pics when I go hike
