The AR-15 is a semi-automatic weapon, meaning a user can fire multiple shots in quick succession. Its cousin, the M-16, has been used by the US military since Vietnam. While some military assault rifles are fully automatic, civilians are prohibited from owning such weapons in most circumstances.

The AR-15 style rifle comprises about 25% (1/4th) of all firearm production in the U.S. That includes all rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers. There are currently, as of 2024, well over 20 Million of them in civilians hands and that number grows by millions annually.
