In the 1970s and 80s, Colt offered a 4×20 fixed power scope for its commercial AR (the SP-1). These replaced the earlier 3x scopes, and were designed to fit directly to the rifle’s carry handle. They are a simple design, with a duplex reticle, BDC calibrated out to 500 yards in 100 yard increments, and good optics. Well, Brownells found the factory that originally made these scopes for Colt, and they still have the original plans. So Brownells arranged a license to use Colt’s name and logo, and had a new run of scopes made. They use the exact same design as originally done, but with material and quality standards of today instead of the 1970s. A pretty cool accessory for a carry handle AR!

nice
Excellent, informative video with the detail that other videos on this scope skip over, thanks much.
I always think of Steve Martin when I see that rericle.
I noticed the 3rd pin……transferable or PDS?
I have reproduction scope like that made by Barska. Bought it about 15 or 20 years ago.
Do a long-range test with the same set up Ian ! I want to see the results with 55 and 62 !
Let's see some groups in a part 2 🙏
Resting the magazine on the ground while firing could cause feeding and extraction problems.
OMG. That's my rifle and my scope from 30 years ago. It was already 20 years old or something back then. No, no brass deflector, because who cares, grey finish. Bakelite front grips (I swapped them for plastic ones like in the video from some reservist). Regular flash hider, unlike the one in the video, with a rifle grenade tensioner. Wooden cheek riser with velcro straps. Only two stops on the buttstock (unless you drill your own). We used to cover the scope lenses with camo net covers – surprisingly rare to see today, it does not affect the clarity. And coupled mags.
This is THE rifle. Makes me want to be young again… 🙂 I used to be proud to walk down the street with it. Like – hey, I'm with HER.
Would love this with a German post reticle.
Is there one for modern receivers? Or a riser of sufficient height?
$399 vs $299 for the earlier Brownells repro just to put Colt's name on it.
$400! Ee-gads!
I've been using the Brownells "Retro" on my 22WMR M16A1 clone. With a little work I've got BDC/hold hold over out to 400 yards on the range. Definitely a combo that gets everyone looking and talking
Checking the brass tempurature before fully grasping it, man of experience, haha.
I have original 4x and 3x scopes. Probably would've lent them to Ian for compare and contrast purposes, providing I could find them.
I have an unauthorized copy of the scope. Fair enough for plinking.
H2 buffer and red springco buffer spring will solve the BTF for left handers.
I'd assume there isn't a see-through portion so you can still use the irons if you wanted to, correct?
A few years back I almost bought one from Gun Parts Corp for about $80. Almost. Regret it now.
Not related but Ian, I don't know if the little speckles are just tiny scars or moles. I just realized the skin of your hands looks "older" than your face (that's a compliment btw), so maybe you'd wanna check with a GP or dermatologist just to be on the safe side.
i thought about getting one for my colt 635 but i think for 9mm its not really worth it
CZ is wasting no time trying to turn Colt around.
I had one of those things. Mine must have been defective because it mauled the fuck out of my carry handle. I absolutely hated that. Also, Brownells licensing Colt for their logo seems like an unnecessary waste of money. Colt and its garbage leadership will never die if they keep getting money. But whatever. I guess the cloners want their logo.
Hey brother this was a good video and i want to give you props for giving us an inside look at the scope most of these retro scope videos skip that sort of detail 👍🏻👍🏻🪖💯
I purchased a C-More 4×21 scope mark Colt back in the late 1999 from CDNN. I installed on my 1984 SWG (Olympic)Car-15.
I love a forward assist less AR
