Last week, Governor Reynolds signed House File 2556 into law which provides a much-needed enforcement mechanism to Iowa’s existing firearm preemption statute. The NRA would like to thank Governor Reynolds for signing this critical piece of legislation and her continued commitment to protecting Second Amendment rights in Iowa. NRA also thanks Rep. Bill Gustoff for introducing the bill, and all members of the Iowa legislature who supported HF 2556 throughout this year’s legislative session.

Under Iowa’s existing firearm preemption laws, local jurisdictions are prohibited from imposing any ordinance, motion, resolution, policy, or amendment that is inconsistent with or stricter than state law. This uniformity helps protect citizens’ Second Amendment rights by preventing a patchwork of local regulations. HF 2556 improves the existing law by providing an enforcement mechanism to help ensure compliance by assigning a monetary value to damages that occur as a result of violations.
