This week, House File 2556, which would provide a much-needed enforcement mechanism to Iowa’s existing firearm preemption law, received final passage in the Senate with bipartisan support. HB 2556 will now be transmitted to Governor Kim Reynold’s desk for her signature.
Under Iowa’s existing firearm preemption laws, local jurisdictions are prohibited from imposing any ordinance, motion, resolution, policy, or amendment that is inconsistent or more severe than state law. This uniformity helps protect citizens’ Second Amendment rights by preventing a patchwork of regulations. HF 2556 improves the existing law by providing an enforcement mechanism to help ensure compliance by assigning a monetary value to damages that occur as a result of violations.
