This week both chambers of the Tennessee General Assembly took action to advance critical financial privacy protections for gun owners. Yesterday, the Senate passed Senate Bill 2223 by a 25-5 vote and on Tuesday the companion House Bill 2762 passed the House Commerce Committee by a voice vote. HB 2762 now advances to the House floor where it will be eligible for a vote. Please use the Take Action button below to contact your Representative and urge them to SUPPORT HB 2762.
SB 2223/HB 2762 prohibits the use of firearm/ammunition specific merchant category codes by payment processors. This is an important protection for gun owners, protecting private purchasing information from abuse by third parties.
NRA thanks Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson (R-SD 27), the sponsor of the Senate bill, and Representative Rusty Grills (R-HD77), the sponsor of the House bill, for their efforts to keep the bills moving through the legislative process in both chambers.
Collecting firearm retailer financial transaction data amounts to surveillance and registration of law-abiding gun owners. Those promoting these schemes in turn support this type of intrusion and it should be presumed that the goal of this program is to share all collected firearm retailer MCC data with government authorities and potentially private third parties that may include gun control organizations and anti-gun researchers.
Please stay tuned to the NRA-ILA website and your inbox for updates as these critical bills progress in the Volunteer State.
