PART 4: Barrel and JP Enterprises Free Float Rail Installation

In part 4 of this series on building the ultimate 3-gun AR15 rifle, I install the barrel to the VLTOR MUR-1 upper receiver. The MUR line of AR15 receivers is bomber and an absolute beast for the this rifle. The barrel I selected in an SPR profile 18″ rifle gas length stainless steel match barrel. This barrel also has the .223 Wylde chamber.

After the barrel is installed, I add a JP 15.5″ free float rail tube. A free float rail was essential to this build and JP provides the ultimate in quality.

Stay tuned for PART 5 where I install the muzzle device, the Battlecomp 1.0.

  1. I know this is an old post but I have a question – I just purchased Wylde 18" 3 Gun Rifle Barrel and plan to use an adjustable gas block and Low Mass BCG. Since I'm using a Rifle Length barrel. I just want to verify I will need an A2 or Rifle length BUFFER, RIFLE LENGTH BUFFER SPRING, AND BUFFER? Anyone care to provide me with an answer? Also, I have a concern with attaining access to the adjustable gas block. The Gas Block has a detent which is accessible from th e front, allen wrench style. What is the maximum length I should go with a handguard and still gove me access to the detent pin, just in case I need to make adjustments to the gas block?

  2. Hi! Very nice and comprehensive video. Very much appreciated.
Based on the comments posted, I just want to know the performance of the rainier arms match barrel regarding how it shoots. Also, if you happened to know the difference between the rainier arms match barrels vs their ultramatch barrel knowing there's a $100+ difference between both. Thanks in advance.

  3. Have you ever thought of the BCM KMR 15"? For a fact, u know its lighter and slimmer from the outside diameter. I'm interested to know why you went with the JP route. Thanks…

  4. Specifically, which barrel is this. I understand it is a SPR profile Barrel with a .750 OD at the gas block. Obviously it is 18" in length and is stainless with a wylde chamber, but what is the manufacturer or where did you source it from?

  5. I just bought a Vltor MUR upper receiver can't wait to inst the BCM 16"barrel and 15"Geissele MK2. I noticed that it looks like you feed ramps look a little deeper than on my receiver. It should be okay though I checked and they line up nicely.
I also have the JP Enterprises full mass bcg and silent capture spring. Awesome setup

  6. If you look at what the top shooters are doing equipment wise, they are going as light and fast as possible with low mass carriers, low mass buffers, and adjustable gas blocks. It allows for fine-tuning ability but in my opinion runs on the ragged edge of reliability. I'd rather take a little more recoil, a little slower lock up, but know that every time I pull the trigger it goes boom and cycles correctly. Even 1 malfunction clearance takes 5 seconds away from you.

  7. Personally I have not seen a reason to go to one. It may reduce recoil somewhat but I've always considered the buffer a way of tuning the gas system for reliability, not really reducing recoil. In theory it should as it should slow down the lock time. But I have honestly never used one. I considered it for an SBR build but it ran like a top with an H buffer so i figured I would just leave well enough alone.

  8. Your 1st response got me thinking of getting a rifle gas system. But yes, my original question was comparing the carbine buffer system to the rifle buffer system. As you know the rifle buffer tube is longer and the buffer is bigger too. What are your thoughts on this when it comes to recoil?

  9. Whether its the balance of the rifle due to weight or the gas, this gun is the flattest shooting AR I've ever shot. Rifle gas with a battlecomp has no muzzle rise at all. My first AR had carbine gas and it was sometimes difficult for me to keep it on target for the 2nd shot. There is no comparison really. Rifle length just destroys carbine length. Mid-length is quite a bit better as well.
