Daily Defense 3-24: Shooting Drill #3 – Rifle-Mount Exercise

In this episode, Jeff demonstrates a drill to help you develop a rifle mount that’s right for your body type and rifle. The “rifle mount” is moving the rifle from a point of carry and getting it on the target. This drill involves mounting the rifle and firing 5 (five) shots half a second apart using different support hand positions, stock positions, and levels of grip pressure. You want the combination that produces the best rifle mount for you. To find your best SUPPORT HAND position, shoot the drill with the support hand (1) pushed far forward on the forend (handguard on an AR-15), (2) pulled far back close to the receiver, and (3) in the middle of the forend. You’re looking for the support hand position that gives you the best control of muzzle rise.

To find the best STOCK position, you’ll shoot the drill a total of six times, the first three with the butt of the stock resting high, low, and in the middle of your shoulder pocket. Then shoot the drill three more times, resting the stock on the outer edge of your shoulder, inboard closer to the center of the body, and half-way between. You’re looking for the combination of vertical and lateral positioning that gives you the best control of the recoil and lets you get the sights back on the target the fastest. Finally, shoot the drill 3 more times with different GRIP PRESSURE, squeezing hard with left hand only, right hand only, and with BOTH hands.

  1. The right to self defense.
When bullets fly through the air, they do so at amazing speeds. The fastest bullets travel more than 2,600 feet per second.
Explain how an unarmed person, confronted by a bad guy with a weapon or , baseball batt, knife, etc.
      A outruns a bullet.
B has time to get the phone out.
C has the calm or wherewithal to call law enforcement.

The bullet travels over 1,800 miles per hour. To put that in perspective, it's amazing to realize that bullets travel over twice the speed of sound
Explain how law enforcement is supposed to travel faster than a bullet traveling 1,800 mph to save a life.
Even if they get a call.
Sadly Innocent people everywhere are defenseless, when confronted by the  bad guy .
There is no superman or super hero like on TV faster than a speeding bullet to save the day.
Why don't politicians who believe in firearm control give up their weapons and have body gaurds without weapons.
This is why I believe in the second amendment and self defense.
You are your own first responder.
Call or write your local politicians and the ones in Washington to let them know how you will vote if they don't represent your rights.

  2. Questions unanswered. It seems Jeff was fine with the stock in the middle, although I thought I saw a difference in his cheek weld. Marines teach a high perch, with the most purchase between toe and shoulder wedge. That mount makes a cheek weld much easier for me. The cheek weld is definitely one of the four contact points for accuracy, so I feel it helps me. I guess maybe the point is to experiment to see what fits each individual.

  3. Also if you haven't already, I would like to see a video on showing people how de escalation protocol is just as or more important than training in some cases. I know it's not everyone, but I see some videos were people seem like their looking for an opportunity, or they feel like they have to use their CCW when some altercations could be avoided. I'm all for carrying and self defense, but only when you REALLY feel like your life is being ACTUALLY threatened. Keep up the good work Jeff! Showing newer gun owners, and some that already carry, how to safely and efficiently operate their firearms.

  4. Hard to keep my eyes on the muzzle when Jeff is looking so good! lol , way to go Jeff. Definitely covered the basics of just shooting the rifle, and how to determine controlling it in the best and most comfortable (intuitive) way for each individual shooter. Gonna like this riffle series, hope to see you go into some depth.

  5. I like to shoot a rifle left handed as a righty so that my strong hand can lead the target and my stronger arm can hold the rifle longer. Your bolt release is on the left side as well. If you get an ambi safety and mag release you can operate all the functions of the gun with one hand. It is more advanced, but it really pays dividends when you master it and will make you so much faster. When you shoot pistol right handed it makes it easier to go to your sidearm as well. Good stuff, thanks for your service.
