In this video we discuss the pros, cons, and ideal use case of red dot magnifiers. What are they for? What are they good at? What should you watch out for when buying one? I dunno man I’m just a video description you think they tell me anything?

  1. I like magnifiers because they stack. I run four 5x magnifiers inline to hit a cool 625x for long range. Works great with an EXPS3.0. I like the flexibility of running 125x or 5x too, though I don't really have a use case for the 25x mode. Good video.

  2. Something you didn't mention (and this is a VERY small detail, I know) was that putting a magnifier behind an Eotech isn't quite the same as putting one behind a red dot. With a red dot, the dot is also magnified. With an Eotech, the dot stays the same size – which means it practically goes from a 1 MOA dot to a 1/3 MOA dot that allows for more precise aiming (if using a 3x magnifier).

  3. Actually, the circle-dot is a range finding reticle. The distance from dot to bottom of circle can be overlayed with a human-sized (5.7'-6') target and how much of the space they take up can be used to determine a fairly accurate distance. I believe 6 foot head on dot, feet on bottom of circle = 100 yards, head on dot and feet 3/4 of the way is 200-250, half is 400 or 500, and if they only fill 1/4 of the space from dot to circle is 600+ (or something like that)… This is for 65 MOA, 1 MOA Circle-dot. This would work even better for the SIG 8T since you have multiple MOA BDC dots to help you more accurately divide up the space to infer distance.

  4. I'll always be jealous of people who can shoot outside. Living in a city, I can only go to stuffy, hot, poorly ventilated indoor ranges that I have to share with 20 other people with questionable knowledge and use of range safety.

  5. Didn't some company just release a magnifier that mounts infront of a red dot?
And there is another company who makes a big 3x?, flip up magnifying glass 🔎, that mounts forward too. It looks funky but apparently works.
Theoretically you could add it all up, and 3x x 3x= 9x!

  6. Thanks for the video! Do you feel like the red dots (not Eotechs) have a fine enough (high enough resolution) aiming point when using with a magnifier? I've always figured a red dot under a magnifier would look less like a dot and have more "startbursting".

  7. Why carry the extra weight of a magnifier if youre not gonna use it? Under nods, youre never gonna use it, so just QD it off the gun and throw it in a pocket. Problem solved. Now unity FTC is good again. If youre already training with the dot on a unity riser, youre gonna get used to not the height making the taller mount a non issue behind the magnifier. I agree 2.26 isnt the most comfy height but the compromise is for keeping the same training for day or night plus nods and gas mask or sheilds etc. isnt the perfect 1 off system but its a good system for multiple uses. If ur not passive aiming with nods, skip the unitys. Go 1.93. If youre needing the same optic training for nods masks sheilds etc. the unity may be a good fit. You can always use stock cheek risers if you want a cheek weld like youd get on lower 3rd

  8. Man it's hard to find people that actually know what they're talking about and make good points. Subscribed.

I admit I like my LVPO for various situations but I can't help but love my EoTech and 3X. For SHTF, in my area I don't need a 1-6X but it sure is nicer on the range!

  9. A veteran to Iraq and Afghanistan with the 3/75 told me
100 yards you can see a face
    200 yards no face
    300 yards hands disappear
    400 yards head disappears
500 yards light between legs disappears
    600 yards fat triangle

  10. Magnifiers are worth it if you are like myself who compete in rifle matches. Instead of using an LPVO where you have a crappy eye box for targets under 25 yards, this is where a red dot will shine, and when I need to go out to say 50 to 300 yards, this is were my 3x magnifier shines!!! If you don't believe, go shoot some rifle competition like USPSA rifle, PCSL, and you will realize how a magnifier is worth it.

  11. Since I'm a broke boy peasant, I believe for me an LPVO does the trick fine. I'm too broke to worry about running kit with NODs and less moving pieces taking up real estate on the top rail the better.

Also, less stuff to get caught on things and a LPVO can be cheaper than a magnifier/red dot combo.

  12. Never knew if a magnifier would have a useful purpose for me. Have an Aimpoint M-3 red-dot. There are a lots of forested areas where I live. So 200 yards is the farthest you can clearly see at the longest. I guess I can just do without a magnifier. Besides most of my life has been with iron sight guns anyway. Sometimes it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

  13. I bought a Primary Arms 3x magnifier and cut/peeled that cheap rubber molding off and replaced with grip tape which makes it lighter and more stream lined. I also use the LaRue tactical mount which allows quick detach. I would only carry the magnifier in my pocket as a monocular and attach it in the extremely rare event someone in my world is threatening me beyond 200 yards. Otherwise, the main philosophy which I think is best for most patriot citizens is the red dot holographic with an encased emitter. Definitely faster than iron sights and allows both eyes to stay open.
