The problem with .22lr is will it stop or kill someone? Sure, but they're going to die an hour later at the hospital after doing whatever they where doing to do that made you shoot them in the first place.

.22 kills more humans than any other round. That includes war.
You know, .22LR might not be the biggest baddest caliber out there but if i was creeping on someone with the intent to inflict bodily harm and they lit me up with 5-10 rounds center of mass, I'd probably stop and think twice about what I'm doing.
22LR rocks, is relatively cheap, and is all you need unless you're doing some kind of military action

.22LR is a nice little varmint round, it definitely has its place but let's be honest with ourselves, it's NOT a defense round. Can it be used as such, sure but there are much better options. .22 Mag, now that's a different story.

I'd rather shoot 22lr in a home all day over 9mm or 45. 9mm Gen 4 17 is what I use and it's fun to shoot but will go through one end of my home to the other.
