In today’s video, retired Navy SEAL Mark “Coch” Cochiolo discusses selecting budget red dots.

Contrary to popular opinion, you probably don’t need all of the features found with top-of-the-line red dots.

Coch talks about what to consider if you are leaning towards purchasing one of the many budget red dots in the market.

  1. I'm not a "tactical operator", just a guy who enjoys target shooting. Just got my first red dot/magnifier combo. Holsun 403r and hm3x, $330. Overall very pleased. The only issue for me is when I use the magnifier, I need to be up close to it. I normally run my stock all the way back but with the hm3x, my stock is all the way forward, my nose almost touching the charging handle.
The only way I can get a full view. The 403r doesn't have the shake awake like the 403b but in every other regard, I think it's a better product. Better battery compartment and longer life, tactile rotary brightness dial instead of push buttons, shrouded elevation and windage knobs, and a lower cost.
Was between the 403r and the romeo 5, but after watching a comparison review, the 403r is a good deal brighter at equal settings. With the riser added to the hm3x, they line up perfectly for 1/3 cowitness. And with the hm3x in the pushed right position, I still have room to deploy the backup mbus rear sight. Now to get to the range and zero the red dot in.

  2. If I have a question I come her first now. Answered my first question now I have a few more, so I am off to see if Coch has that covered. Range of the PA 1X and Romeo 5, abilities of the RD's overall. I use CR2032 batteries a lot and they last a long time and also store for long periods of time. I often seek out items by battery. Thanks Coch/TH, I appreciate Coch and the "team"…..

  3. Like the fact that you have realistic budget friendly options for red dots.
Especially as the economy worsens, crime spikes and people are more concerned about family safety and finances.
    Keep up the fantastic work.

  4. Hey Coch, what was the brand on the cheap red dot on the 22lr? That's what im putting a red dot on too. And it's a plinker as well. Thanks for your informative videos. You do good work. Very common sense, real info.

  5. Good enough and a bucket of ice with some cold beers on a little fishing boat is better, than super expensive glass and a glass of water… mental health considerations. 🙂

  6. Please stop justifying my red dots. I AM ASHAMED. I promise, the cool guys will eventually see them. actually, i would never ever ever allow anyone else to see my romeo 5s or holosuns. This is not satire at all. I don’t like this

  7. The Sig Romeo 5 is a great budget optic ….. as you say Coch. And it actually is my RDS of choice for my home defense gun. Mostly because I want reliable, easy to use, no complexity. The Romeo 5 gives me a crisp 2 MOA dot that always comes on and works quite well at 25 yards, or less. And that’s what I need on the home defense gun. I put much more into the furniture (B5 SOPMOD stock and Type 23 grip, Magpul AFG), the sling (Vickers), the trigger (Ruger’s 2 stage), and so on. All I want that dot to do is give me that clear cut reticle on target for the platform.

  8. Just picked me up a sig romeo5 at a pawn shop for 30 becaue the battery was dead and I replaced it and the dude works great it has a tiny bit of flair. It works good for an ar but itll be great for a semi auto shotgun I bet
