Yesterday, the California Legislature was up to their usual tricks, “gutting and amending” a bill of a completely different subject matter to push for more gun control. The latest effort is Assembly Bill 1587, formerly legislation pertaining to the Health and Safety Code dealing with multifamily housing, which has been amended to now require credit card issuers to use specified merchant category codes unique to firearm and ammunition retailers. This is one more attack on law-abiding citizens that continues to put more restrictions and regulations on law-abiding persons and businesses while ignoring the criminal element. As California continues down this path, Idaho, Mississippi, and Texas have passed laws this year banning such efforts to track gun owners. AB 1587 has not been scheduled for a policy hearing at this time but we anticipate it will be scheduled soon.
