Why I Don't Use PMAGs

The Magpul PMAG is a great, well designed magazine that many people like and use in various rifles around the world, but over the years I have discovered that they are not the best option for me personally. It isn’t that they are bad (in fact they feed and run very well in certain firearms) but in my years of shooting I have simply found that other products may better suit a myriad of shooters.

  1. I like pmags over aluminum or steel. The thing with metal mags is they bend without breaking and if stepped on they might look ok, but have bent enough to be unreliable. Polymer is nice because they flex and if broken they actually crack and you have a very obvious visual reason to throw them out. Ive seen a lot of people with metal mags for their AR keep trying to get an old mag to work when there's a very minor tweak in the feed lip or sidewall that keeps it from functioning.

  2. I agree 100%.

There is a reason Thermolds are called Thermelts. Granted poly mags are mostly ok, I do not wish to have that thought in the back of my head in the field. Especially when GI mags are proven.

Also remember, the magazines are considered a “disposable” component of the system. Stoner designed it that way.

If I had my way, I think we should be using Lancer L5 Advanced Warfight Magazines (L5AWM)

  3. I mostly use usgi magazines too. But I got a lancer to try and it seems to work fine in my rifle. My Cetme L won't take pmags. Lancer feels lighter and thinner. They can fit in my MOLLE II bandoleer where as pmags are too far. They also have metal reinforcement.

  4. I dunno about AR PMAGs, I've used both army issue and PMAG and they're the same. Now the AK PMAGs on the other hand… you can't beat it. Best AK mag choice by far. I've used Russian steel, North Korean steel, Polish plastic, US Palm, and PMAG and the PMAG shit on all the others.

Edit: also most normal people cannot afford to buy fancy rich hoity toity guns like F2000s, SCARs, and 416s, so who cares.

  5. I think this ignores that biggest strengths of the Pmag, which is its reliability and durability. The old aluminum GI mags are notorious for wearing out and refusing the function. In the Marines we considered them damn near disposable. The Pmags are more reliable and durable. The purpose of the magazine is to feed, and the Pmag does this better. So the Pmag offers increased functionality in the single most important aspect of a feeding device, which is worth a couple ounces in weight and $4 to us. Why do we care if the Pmag doesn't function in the FS2000, or some other obscure design, when it functions better in the AR15, of which Americans own well over 20 million?

  6. My personal experience with the magpul 30 round I have in 7.62×39 is reload, the tooth on the mag doesn't pop and will ride halfway up the tooth, but also doesn't rattle when fully inserted like the korean steel 40 rounds. I've come to the conclusion that they're great to lead with as the first mag, zero other complains.

  7. The PMAG is "Far" quieter in a Combat theater which is very important and pushing the button pulling it out is generally not an issue, we keep our used Mags.
I guess if your in a Rifle competition the speed factor will come into play and I would use a Steel mag then !! Semper Fi

  8. I noticed you changed “like” to “use” on the thumbnail. People were getting so sensitive while defending the PMAGs that they were disliking the video before watching it.

  9. U didn’t mention one very important aspect which is that Metal mags are malleable and deform from hitting the ground..Only a matter of time before your warped or bent magazine causes more stoppages in your rifle that wouldn’t be an issue with the more durable pmag which is why the military trusts them more than their older counterparts

  10. That's part of wanting to go with "better quality" rifles. You pay a premium price for the rifle and you have to pay a premium price for the mags specifically designed for that rifle. I don't see the problem here.

  11. After watching this video again. I apologize for the child-like name-calling. I have since deleted that post. In all seriousness. I have NEVER in my life had a PMag NOT drop free INSTANTLY, in EVERY weapon platform I've used them in. Being a spec 4 Marine, I've used more man-portable weapon systems than most. P-Mags we're used in all but the belt-fed S.A.W and any other belt-fed weapon. Otherwise, it was Magpul all the way. The problem with metal mags is just the slightest bend in the feed lips, like from a drop, and the mag won't fit, feed correctly, etc. Just my 2¢

  12. I've had the same problems with pmags not seating properly but I fixed this by either taking 1 round from the mag or by reseating the mag's spring itself… idk how it worked but after that it sat comfortably in the rifle without the slap n pull
