It was never a military weapon
The AR15 was made by Armalite and have never been used in a war. The military guns, The M16 rifle and eventually M4 carbine, are made by Colt. The M16/M4 are AR15 pattern rifles, but are illegal to own and have never been sold to civilians who don’t have specific NFA permits.

The army got it from the civilian market, Eugene stoners armalite rifle. After years of testing and some conspiracy from the army, using national match m1a's against rack grade ar15s, and a lot of pull from the air force under Curtis Lemay. After aquisition the military made some changes, added automatic fire capability and later moved the charging handle from the top to the back.

So many blatant errors or lies. The Oregon shooting did not use an AR15. He slaughtered his victims with a hand gun. No it doesn't make a difference in the result of the victims but politicizing the loss of life for the convenience of an article is wrong. Also the semiauto AR15 is neither a weapon of war or used by the military. The Original full auto Armalite AR15 and the semi auto Colt AR15 are not the same. One cost $600-900 the other $16,000. The military uses both the M16 and the M4. Both are versions of the full auto original Armalite AR15 and not the civilian Colt AR15.
The first AR-15s were made in 1958 by Armalite it was in 59 that the rights to it were sold to Colt

Odd that 80% of mass shootings don't use the AR15 folks. FBI statistics shown that less than 1% of the AR-15 rifles were ever used in violent crime folks. Most of theses so called News Media outlets are now anti-gun and 2nd Amendment. I don't see how this particular shooting supports rhetoric/argument on EITHER side of current the gun control debate. As a person going into my office on the day of the office Christmas party, I doubt if I would be carrying a firearm, nor do I assume the boss maintains a weapons locker in the office supplies room; SO if I was there that day, I would not likely be able to defend with a firearm myself despite free exercise or tight gun legislation. I doubt if a terrorist couple would wait for me to go get my gun, just to play fair.
Conversely, it doesn't support strong gun legislation either. No proposed legislation if enacted would have stopped a bit of last week's events. The shooters "borrowed" their illegally modified, large clip AR15s from a neighbor and the husband was able to pass all the background checks in a tighter gun control state like CALIFORNIA, and of course they crafted bombs. The shooters in Paris for the last 3 attacks were able to get guns or automatic real military assault weapons illegally, apparently in Belgium, despite two of the recent terrorists only recently "refugeeing" into Europe in the summer with false papers. Picked up military weapons in a tightly gun restricted nation and drove across an open border to another gun restricted nation all without catching the eye of a single government "professional" there to keep that from happening. The same thing happened recently in newly gun restricted Australia and then there was the occurrence in Canada, inside the government building.
I'd rather not live in a world where everyone is packing heat in their everyday lives, but I also like to see people decide issues based on realistic logic and not just use and spin any tragic incident to win an argument. Life is not a ball game, with winners and losers. We guess wrong, we ALL lose.
